I filled out some of my reu applications by hand rather than typing them up on the computer. My parents don't think this is acceptable. What do you guys think?

I would type them.
 
How you fill out the application depends on what technological capability or equipment you have, and how well you know how to use it. Unfortunately for some, how you fill out the applications depends on exactly what the organization requires from the applicant about how to fullfil the application. This is more general than just the "REU".
