Is This the Correct Equation for the Surface Gradient?

Just a really quick sanity check. This equation...

\nablasU = \nablaU - n*(n \bullet \nablaU)

...the correct equation for the surface gradient given \nablaU is the gradient of the surface and n is the normal unit vector?
