Law of Magnetic Attraction?Power of mind over matter?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around the concept of the Law of Magnetic Attraction and the power of the mind over matter, sparked by a user's inquiry into its validity despite scientific skepticism. The conversation references claims made by individuals like Magola, who asserts the ability to attract objects and levitate. Critics, including James Randi, highlight the lack of credible evidence supporting such abilities, pointing out past failures in demonstrations and the absence of media coverage or scientific validation. The argument emphasizes that if these powers were real, they would be widely recognized and investigated, rather than relegated to obscure online claims. The overall sentiment leans towards skepticism regarding the authenticity of magnetic attraction abilities.

Hello all you brainy people :-)

I am new to the forum and not a physicist.

Can you all please explain how this could be achieved even under so much scietific scrutiny?

You've GOT to be kidding!

Read this note from James Randi (see "Same Old Magnetic Flummery"):

Randi said:
Now, this man Magola wrote to the JREF as an applicant back in December of 1996. He claims not only to have the ability to attract metal, ceramic and wooden objects to his body, but also that he could levitate. In 1996, he appeared on an English television program called Beyond Belief, but was unable to levitate on that occasion, although his other demos created strong public interest. We exchanged many notes about his application, which suddenly ceased when I suggested that I would dust his skin with talcum powder before such a test. Perhaps Magola is allergic to talcum powder...?

And more (see A Sticky Person):
Randi said:
To cover the embarrassing fact that he has not replied, he has now made a claim that I already accept his powers. That's hardly the case. Just take a look at www.magola.com/English/welcome.html and you'll see that he's just another of the many untalented "magnetic" people, no better and no worse, and imagine what talcum powder would do to spoil that act.

Oh my!

Just ask yourself: If someone could really do this, then why don't you see it on the news and every talk show on TV? Why isn't this guy being paid gobs of money and being studied. Nothing this big would be at obscure internet links, with nothing but cheesy photos as evidence.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
