AI Thread Summary
A test-taker of the Math Subject GRE reported a potential error in one of the questions, which they found to be straightforward yet confusing. They noted that four out of five answer choices were clearly incorrect, while the fifth option was missing a number that would align it with the others. After verifying their answer with a calculator, they expressed uncertainty about whether they misread the question. The individual suggested that others who took the test might have similar concerns and encouraged reporting any perceived mistakes to ETS. Ultimately, they reflected on their own misunderstanding, attributing it to a reading comprehension issue rather than an actual error in the question.

Just took the Math Subject GRE today, and at the risk of making a fool of myself I believe I came across an error in one of the questions. I'm not sure how much I can mention about the question, but it was probably the easiest question on the entire test, which really makes me wonder if I read it wrong or something. If anyone here took the test they should know exactly what I'm taking about if it was indeed a faulty question.

I'm no genius, but the question was so straightforward (I think) and 4 of the 5 answers were clearly wrong. Note that those four answers were real numbers, all of a similar form. The fifth was missing one number which would have made it of the same form as the other answers, and it would have been the answer I ended up getting over and over. I have checked on a calculator and I'm getting the same thing.

Is there any way to report this somehow? I know I'm being very vague but the internet isn't 100% private and I'm too paranoid to post the actual question. But again, anyone who took this should know what I'm talking about, otherwise I might be wrong.

Email ETS about it if you feel there was a mistake.

After thinking about it more I realize where I went wrong. Basically a reading comprehension failure, although I think it's a slightly confusing problem to begin with.

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
