AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on issues encountered with Mathematica 4.0 after installation on a laptop, following a hard drive crash on a desktop. The user reports that the kernel crashes during calculations, even simple ones like 2+2. Despite running the same operating system (Windows XP) on both devices, the problem persists. Suggestions include checking for patches, considering a clean installation of Mathematica, and investigating any error codes or logs that could provide insight into the issue. There is also a query about whether other installed programs are experiencing similar problems.

Greetings

I have mathematica 4.0, and I've just had to install in on my laptop because my desktop HD crashed. For some reason, the kernel crashes any time I try to do a calculation, even something like 2+2

I run the same OS on my laptop as on my desktop (XP), so I have no idea what the problem could be. Any thougths?

Does this happen with any other installed programs? Have you checked for any patches for mathematica?

Password problem?

... would suggest a clean install of the mathematica for starters and see if it repeats, unless it gives any identifiable error code or something can be found from logs, dumps etc?
