AI Thread Summary
A recent earthquake near Masterton, New Zealand, occurred on April 11, 2016, at 19:41 UTC, with a reported magnitude of 4.8 by the USGS, while local sources, including Geonet, reported it as a magnitude 5.2. The earthquake's epicenter was located 12 km WNW of Masterton at a depth of 27.1 km, which is considered shallow. Residents in the area felt the tremor, and it was followed by several aftershocks measuring between 2.6 and 3.3. The discrepancy in magnitude reports is noted, with some favoring Geonet's data due to its extensive sensor network in the region compared to the USGS's more distant monitoring stations. The earthquake's proximity to Masterton's water treatment plant was also mentioned, highlighting its local impact.

yeah, I will believe the GNS report for this one. They have a very good saturation of sensors over the region
where as the closest 2 for the USGS are Wellington, NZ and Raoul Is, (NZ) around 500km nth of the North Island, NZ

Quite rich in small aftershocks, here's the last 24 hour
This also helps to confirm the M5+ status :)

I was in the shower at the time, and my dad came in and asked if I felt the earthquake -- I didn't. It seems it occurred right below Masterton's water treatment plant.

A guy on the radio asked if it knocked the froth off of your Latte :-)

Thread 'The Secrets of Prof. Verschure's Rosetta Stones'
(Edit: since the thread title was changed, this first sentence is too cryptic: the original title referred to a Tool song....) Besides being a favorite song by a favorite band, the thread title is a straightforward play on words. This summer, as a present to myself for being promoted, I purchased a collection of thin sections that I believe comprise the research materials of Prof. Rob Verschure, who at the time was faculty in the Geological Institute in Amsterdam. What changed this...
These last days, there is a seemingly endless cluster of rather powerful earthquakes close to the islands of Santorini, Amorgos, Anafi, and Ios. Remember, this is a highly volcanically active region, Santorini especially being famous for the supervolcanic eruption which is conjectured to have led to the decline of the Minoan civilization: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minoan_eruption To grasp the scale of what is happening, between the 26th of January and the 9th of February, 12000...
