Nationality of PFians: Poll & Country Distribution

AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around creating a poll to assess the distribution of nationalities among members of Physics Forums (PF). Participants express curiosity about demographic changes since previous polls, noting that the current options may not be comprehensive enough. There is a suggestion to include regions instead of just countries to better represent the diversity of members. The conversation highlights specific countries represented, with the United States, United Kingdom, and India frequently mentioned as significant contributors. Overall, the community is engaged in refining the poll to capture a more accurate picture of its international membership.

What country are you from?

Hi
Just curious over the distribution of nationalities here in PF. Can we create a poll regarding this? Generally which country's people are more here?

Physics news on Phys.org
I'm pretty sure this has been done before, but it's been a while.

I'm American, in Washington state (no, not Washington DC - think Seattle, Microsoft, Boeing, Space Needle, Nirvana, lots and lots of rain, Starbucks...etc.).

It has been awhile, I'm sure demographics have changed.

We have 10 categories I can put into a poll.

Recommendations?

Good. Do that Evo.!

Very nice :approve:!

Drat! You had my hopes up...I tried to find the alien option in the poll.

We've had less poll options in the past, so aside from demographics shifting, there were even more missing choices in past polls. We probably still need an "other" category.

France is in the list, but Germany isn't? Are you trying to re-start the Franco-Prussian War?

  • #12
Btw, I don't see a "Germany" option in the poll...

Edit: jtbell, you were faster... ;-)

  • #13
There are a lot of countries still missing. Perhaps we needed regions rather than countries so we'd have a chance of being more inclusive with the number of options available.

Germany is on there.

I started doing eastern europe, western europe, northern europe...

It's a work in progress.

Thanks to whoever put Dominican Republic there! :!)

Thanks Evo. Is there a way to present this poll in the home page of PF so that members logging in could vote before they start visiting the threads? That would ensure a good vote count. But I don't think that's possible.
Anyway great work. :)

I voted for the US because the Middle East is not a country. And also because I am a US national.

4% of PF's members are from Norway.

Unfortunately that has decreased to 2.7% right now, while the Netherlands is on 5.7%

I think very few members of PF are aware of this poll.

We could move it to Forum Feedback. I'll let it stay here for a few days first.

Africa and South America aren't countries either. It was a necessity to add regions/continents. With only 20 slots, I had to compromise. Ireland isn't on there, oops.

I voted other because Denmark wasn't in the poll.

Denmark was a Norwegian colony once, so you could have voted for Norway instead.

Eric of Pomerania was a NORWEGIAN king first, for example:

I have dual nationality, South African (not on the list) and UK, but UK is only a technicality as I was born and raised in SA, but have a British dad. I'm not polling until SA is added to the list :)-

Hmmm... given that you have been my only exposure to Norweeds, I thought that you were all queens.
Anyhow, I'm Canuck all the way. Having seen Sorry! sing, I can understand his name. You can tell right away that either he's tone-deaf or he has a sprained finger.

We don't particularly want to hear about your sex life; this is a population poll.

where do you guys come from?

I love this forum. It seems that all people here are experts. I am just curious about which cities/universities do you guys come from?

  • #31

Some people put this information in their profiles. On the other hand, a lot of people apparently don't want to give out any clues as to their specific location, for privacy reasons.

I came from the same place my mother comes from.

Hi hangover, I've merged your thread with our most recent poll.

"Where do you guys come from?"

From Africa, around 2.5 million years ago.

I hate this question! Many people asks it to me and I do not know the answer.
I was born in Montreal, Canada in 1987. Lived there until I was 4.5 years old. Then I moved to France until I was 15 years old. Then I moved back to Canada until I was 17.5. Then I moved back to France until I was 19. Then I moved to Argentina until now (I'm 23).
When I was living in France, I used to visit my family in Canada for about 3 months/year.
So obviously my reply to your question is "other". I simply don't know where I'm from.

We'll claim you for Canada unless you become an embarrassment, whereupon we will dump you on Argentina. :-p

On the contrary, it is plain that you know a great deal about where you come from.

It is the poll that is ambiguous about what it means to come from somewhere.

So, which place do you most identify with?

Good question. Either France or Canada. I don't feel a stranger in both countries so my best answer would be both Canada and France.

How about a compromise -- Quebec?

Greg, does your data come close to matching what's shown in the poll, as far as frequency?
