Programs PhD Topic Change: Is It Common for Physicists?

AI Thread Summary
Changing research focus during graduate school is not uncommon among physics graduates, with many transitioning from one topic to another while remaining within the field. Personal experiences highlight that such shifts can occur between a master's and PhD or even within a PhD program itself. Open communication with advisors is crucial for navigating these changes successfully. Clarifying the specific context of the inquiry—whether it pertains to shifting topics between degrees or during a PhD—can lead to more tailored responses. The discussion also emphasizes the importance of aligning research focus with personal motivation and interests.

Is it common for physics grads to change the topic of their research focus (staying within physics) while at graduate school?

Physics news on Phys.org
I'm not aware of the statistics regarding how common it is however I myself did it. Completed my master on an experimental project and my PhD was completely different subject in computational physics. I was lucky to discuss my differences with my professor at an early stage in PhD and settled the issue by seperating our ways. (I do not regret this decision even once when I turn back and look.) Your own motivation should shape your way.

Maybe explain how you mean, "grad school" or PhD program.
Did you mean, Masters degree for one topic and then PhD for a different topic? Did you mean, start PhD in one topic but want to change to a different topic?

Why do you need to know, given that you are still in high school? As pointed out "graduate school", "topic', "focus" can mean many things. If you could be clearer in the question, you might get better answers.

"You" who? josh0768 is an undergraduate student according to profile page. I already have a degree , something beyond high school which I already graduated years before that.

He's asking about which undergrad schools to attend here and here.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
