AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on the translation of specific physics terms from English to Chinese, particularly for economically disadvantaged children. Key terms include "scalar," "vector," "dot product," "cross product," and "normal." The translations provided are: scalar (数量), vector (向量 for indices, 带菌者 for disease), dot product (点乘), cross product (叉乘), and normal (直角). It is noted that these translations are in simplified characters, and they are likely the same in traditional characters, which should facilitate the translation process. The conversation also offers to provide pinyin if needed.

I'm not sure where to ask this question, apologies if this is the wrong place.

A friend of mine (native Chinese speaker, from Taipei), is helping with a project to translate some physics texts to Chinese for economically disadvantaged children. It seems that Taiwan Chinese and China's Chinese have many different terms for some basic terms such as:

scalar
vector
dot product
cross product
normal

These are the current 'problem' terms. If someone could post the generally accepted translation in either or both of these dialects, or direct me to an online resource, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Shelly

scalar 数量
vector (the kind that carry indices) 向量
vector (the kind that carry in disease) 带菌者
dot product 点乘
cross product 叉乘
normal 直角

These are simplified characters. Your friend should have no trouble translating to traditional characters. In fact, I think in this case they are all the same.

Thank you very much!

Do you need the pinyin for that?

Just ONCE, I wanted to see a post titled Status Update that was not a blatant, annoying spam post by a new member. So here it is. Today was a good day here in Northern Wisconsin. Fall colors are here, no mosquitos, no deer flies, and mild temperature, so my morning run was unusually nice. Only two meetings today, and both went well. The deer that was road killed just down the road two weeks ago is now fully decomposed, so no more smell. Somebody has a spike buck skull for their...
