Pre-College Physics Internships

In summary, the individual is seeking advice on finding physics-related internship opportunities for the upcoming summer before attending college in the fall. However, there are few options available and the liability of having under-18 year olds in the lab makes it difficult. The deadlines for most internships have already passed, but there may be options through the individual's future college. Additionally, programs for high school students at institutions like MIT and NASA are available but may not necessarily be considered traditional internships.

Hi, I'm going to be attending college in fall, majoring in physics. I was looking for physics-related internship opportunities over the summer. If anybody knows any good programs out there, or can give me some advice on this topic I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you!

There are very, very few of them.

First, these programs can't take all of the undergraduates who apply, so why make the problem worse by opening them up to high school students? Second, the liability issues of having an under-18 year old in the lab make this very, very difficult to do.

MIT has a great program for high school students (as does NASA), but I'm sure the deadlines have passed; most internships require applying in the fall, or by Feb at the latest. Have you tried contacting the school you'll be attending to ask if they have any options for you?

Those programs, though, aren't really internships. (Although they are great ways to spend a few weeks in the summer)

Dear student,

Congratulations on your decision to major in physics in the fall! I highly recommend seeking out pre-college physics internships to gain valuable hands-on experience in your field. There are many great programs available, and I suggest starting your search by checking with your college's career center or physics department for any internship opportunities they may offer or recommend. Additionally, you can search for internships through online databases such as the American Physical Society's Internship and Co-op Program or the National Science Foundation's Research Experiences for Undergraduates program.

When considering internships, be sure to look for opportunities that align with your specific interests and career goals in physics. Some internships may focus on research, while others may offer more practical experience in a specific industry or application of physics. It's also important to consider the location and duration of the internship, as well as any potential financial support or housing options.

In addition to gaining hands-on experience, internships can also provide networking opportunities and potential letters of recommendation for future academic or career pursuits. I also suggest reaching out to physics professionals or professors for advice and recommendations on internships, as they may have valuable insights and connections in the field.

Overall, I highly encourage you to pursue a pre-college physics internship to enhance your understanding and skills in the field and to gain valuable experience for your future academic and career pursuits. Best of luck in your search!

Sincerely,
