AI Thread Summary
A ball rolls off a 1.00 m high table and lands 1.64 m away horizontally. To determine the time in the air and the speed at which it left the table, the relevant equations of motion are applied. The initial vertical speed (V0y) is zero since the ball rolls off horizontally. The horizontal acceleration (a) is also zero, simplifying the calculations. The solution was ultimately found by recognizing these conditions.

Homework Statement

A ball rolls horizontally off the edge of a tabletop that is 1.00 m high. It strikes the floor at a point 1.64 m horizontally away from the table edge. (Neglect air resistance.). How long was the ball in the air and what speed was it at the instant it left the table.

Homework Equations

x-x0 = V0xT + .5(a)t^2

y-y0 = V0yT - .5(g)t^2

The Attempt at a Solution

i am having trouble figuring out anything with this little information. i have tried to use the equations that i provided but it was missing velocity. any other way that i can do that i may have missed?

Your equations are correct. What is the value of V0y? What is the value of 'a' in the x direction?

yeah but i don't know how to find V0y with that information

it's given that the ball rolls off the table horizontally. So what is its initial speed in the y direction if it initially is moving horizontally in the x direction only?

thanks i got the answer.

TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
Thread 'Variable mass system : water sprayed into a moving container'
Starting with the mass considerations #m(t)# is mass of water #M_{c}# mass of container and #M(t)# mass of total system $$M(t) = M_{C} + m(t)$$ $$\Rightarrow \frac{dM(t)}{dt} = \frac{dm(t)}{dt}$$ $$P_i = Mv + u \, dm$$ $$P_f = (M + dm)(v + dv)$$ $$\Delta P = M \, dv + (v - u) \, dm$$ $$F = \frac{dP}{dt} = M \frac{dv}{dt} + (v - u) \frac{dm}{dt}$$ $$F = u \frac{dm}{dt} = \rho A u^2$$ from conservation of momentum , the cannon recoils with the same force which it applies. $$\quad \frac{dm}{dt}...
