Calculating Shear Stress in a Flange Coupling with 4 Bolts

In summary, shear stress is a type of stress that occurs when two surfaces slide or move over each other in opposite directions. Bots, short for robots, are programmable machines that can perform tasks autonomously. Shear stress can affect bots by causing friction and wear on their moving parts, potentially decreasing their efficiency and lifespan. Understanding shear stress is important for bots because it can help engineers design more durable and efficient machines, and also help in predicting potential failures. Some ways to reduce shear stress on bots include using lubricants, designing smoother surfaces, and using materials with higher strength and lower friction coefficients.

Homework Statement

A flange coupling is use to transmit torque of 1500 Nm between two shafts. The coupling has four 8mm dia. bolts equally spaced on a PCD of 175mm. Determine the shear stress on the bolts

Homework Equations

[itex]fs=\frac{F}{A}[/itex]

The Attempt at a Solution

Back of the book answer = 85.3MPa. but I don't know how they get this answer.

It's ok, disaster averted.

Just use t=F*r to convert the torque to a force acting on the bolt's.

Unfortunately TAFE forgot to give me this formula before giving me this question.

What is shear stress?

Shear stress is a type of stress that occurs when two surfaces slide or move over each other in opposite directions.

What are bots?

Bots, short for robots, are programmable machines that can perform tasks autonomously.

How does shear stress affect bots?

Shear stress can affect bots by causing friction and wear on their moving parts, potentially decreasing their efficiency and lifespan.

Why is understanding shear stress important for bots?

Understanding shear stress is important for bots because it can help engineers design more durable and efficient machines, and also help in predicting potential failures.

What are some ways to reduce shear stress on bots?

Some ways to reduce shear stress on bots include using lubricants, designing smoother surfaces, and using materials with higher strength and lower friction coefficients.
