Sound interference homework problem

AI Thread Summary
In a sound interference experiment with sources A and B 2m apart, a girl hears points of maximum loudness at P and Q while walking from X to Y. The problem requires calculating distances AQ and BQ, with the answers being 12.4m and 13m, respectively. For maximum constructive interference at points P and Q, the sound waves must meet in phase, with P representing the zero-order maximum and Q the first-order maximum. The discussion suggests using similar triangles and equations for constructive interference to solve for the distances. Additionally, referencing Young's Double Slit experiment may provide further insight into the problem.

Really stuck at this question.

In an experiment on sound interference, two sources A and B are placed 2m apart. As a girl walks from X to Y she hears a point of maximum loudness ar point P and the next at point Q. Using information from the diagram below find distances AQ and BQ.

Any help would be welcome. Thanks.

PS. Answers = AQ- 12.4m BQ- 13m

Welcome to the PF. One of our rules here is that you must show us some of your own work and thoughts in order for us to help you.

What can you say about constructive interference? What relationship must the two sound waves have at P and again at Q in order for there to be maximum constructive interference?

Constructive interference, waves meet in phase.
At P would the zero order maximum.
At Q would be first order maximum.

I tried the similar triangles but that didn't lead to finding the lengths...

take AQ as x and BQ as x+ \Delta x
Apply equations for Constructive Interference and solve.
Fringe width is PQ.
BTW, you mat want to refer to Youngs Double Slit experiment.

TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
