AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the fate of the Mars rover Spirit, speculating on its preservation in the Air and Space Museum. Participants express concern about whether it will disintegrate or remain intact, with some noting the low atmospheric conditions on Mars that may aid in its preservation. There is a sense of sadness about Spirit's permanent placement on Mars, especially since retrieval seems unlikely. The conversation highlights the emotional connection to the rover and its legacy. Overall, Spirit is expected to be encased in sand over time, marking its enduring presence on Mars.

Poor thing. I wonder what will be the fate of it, is it going to disintegrate quickly or will it be relatively preserved over the next few decades?

It will be preserved. There's so little atmo, it's almost in vacuum. Eventually it will be encased in its own sand dune.

That made me sad :frown:.

This is so sad. I don't think Spirit should worry. It won't be way too long before we get to visit Spirit in the Air and Space museum. Good job robot.

Today at about 4:30 am I saw the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter, where they were about the width of the full moon, or one half degree apart. Did anyone else see it? Edit: The moon is 2,200 miles in diameter and at a distance of 240,000 miles. Thereby it subtends an angle in radians of 2,200/240,000=.01 (approximately). With pi radians being 180 degrees, one radian is 57.3 degrees, so that .01 radians is about .50 degrees (angle subtended by the moon). (.57 to be more exact, but with...
