Anybody know a site where one can find an overview over different kinds of steel and their specifications, such as that St50-2 is actually the same steel as E295. A "handy" site where this type of info can be found...

1. What is steel and what are its main properties?

Steel is an alloy made up of iron and carbon, with small amounts of other elements such as manganese, silicon, and phosphorus. Its main properties include high tensile strength, good ductility, and resistance to corrosion and wear.

2. How is steel produced?

Steel is primarily produced through the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) or electric arc furnace (EAF) methods. Both methods involve melting iron ore and adding other elements to create the desired composition, which is then cast into various shapes and cooled.

3. What are the different types of steel?

There are several types of steel, including carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, and tool steel. Carbon steel is the most commonly used type, while alloy steel contains additional elements for improved strength and hardness. Stainless steel is known for its corrosion resistance, and tool steel is designed for specific applications that require high wear resistance.

4. How do I compare different types of steel?

When comparing different types of steel, it is important to consider factors such as strength, toughness, hardness, corrosion resistance, and cost. The steel's composition, production method, and heat treatment also play a significant role in its properties and should be taken into account.

5. What are the specifications for steel and how do they impact its use?

Steel specifications refer to the specific requirements for a particular type of steel, such as its chemical composition, mechanical properties, and processing methods. These specifications impact the steel's performance and suitability for different applications, such as construction, automotive, or manufacturing.
