In summary, the dress appearing differently to different people is due to color constancy, where our brains adjust for different lighting conditions. Some people see it as white and gold and others see it as blue and black, influenced by factors such as age, gender, and screen brightness. The dress is confirmed to be blue and black, but individual perception can cause it to appear differently. The dress went viral because it was a unique and unexpected phenomenon, widely shared on social media. This also highlights the complexity of perception and the limitations of our visual perception.

I'm sure we discussed this optical illusion, which went viral, here.

Here an update and some background of how it came about which most of us probably didn't know; it is now a matter of lawsuits.

If people were actually using their photo in advertisements, they probably have a case. I wasn't aware anyone was doing that, and the first story doesn't say what company might have done that. I'm curious who would have used it to sell what, and whether it authentically increased their revenue.

What caused the dress to appear differently to different people?

The phenomenon of the dress appearing differently to different people is known as color constancy. This occurs when our brains try to adjust for varying lighting conditions and interpret colors in a way that is consistent with our past experiences. In this case, the dress is actually blue and black, but due to the lighting in the photograph, some people perceive it as white and gold.

Why do some people see the dress as white and gold, while others see it as blue and black?

As mentioned before, the difference in perception is due to color constancy. Additionally, factors such as age, gender, and even screen brightness can also play a role in how we perceive colors. Some people may have a more sensitive perception of color, while others may be more influenced by their surroundings when interpreting colors.

Is there a correct answer to what color the dress actually is?

Yes, the dress is actually blue and black. The company that made the dress confirmed this, and the original photograph of the dress also shows it to be blue and black. However, due to individual differences in perception, it can appear differently to different people.

Why did this dress go viral and spark so much debate?

The dress went viral because it presented a unique and unexpected phenomenon that sparked curiosity and debate. It was also widely shared on social media, which contributed to its popularity. Additionally, the dress's colors were ambiguous enough to cause confusion and differing opinions on its true colors.

What can we learn from the viral "white and gold / blue and black dress" phenomenon?

This phenomenon highlights the complexity of perception and how it can vary from person to person. It also shows how social media can quickly spread and amplify a seemingly simple image or idea. From a scientific perspective, it provides an interesting case study on color constancy and the limitations of our visual perception.
