In summary, there are various factors to consider when seeking funding for a US PhD as a UK student, and being an international student may impact your eligibility for certain programs. There are several good schools for HEP theory in California, New York, and Florida, but it is important to research and reach out to the individual departments for more information.

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some information about the chances of UK student getting funding for a US PhD. Would being an international student make it much more competitive, or are domestic and international students given access to the same funding generally? Also would I stand a better chance if I applied to a private gradschool?

Im interested in HEP theory, does anyone know the best schools in California (apart from Berkeley and stanford), and possibley New york/Florida might be an option.

Thanks

in advance. The chances of a UK student getting funding for a US PhD will depend on a variety of factors, including the specific school, the program, and the individual's academic record. As an international student, you may have to consider additional requirements such as obtaining a visa, which can have an impact on your eligibility for certain programs. Generally, domestic and international students should have access to the same funding opportunities, but there are some exceptions. In terms of HEP theory, there are several good schools in California, such as UC Santa Cruz, UC Irvine, UC Davis, and UCLA. In New York, Cornell University and Columbia University are both excellent options. Florida has some excellent universities as well, such as the University of Florida, Florida State University, and the University of Miami. It is important to look into the specific programs offered by each school and their application requirements. You may also want to contact the individual departments directly to inquire about potential funding opportunities.

for your question! As a fellow scientist, I understand the importance of funding and admissions in pursuing a PhD. The chances of a UK student obtaining funding for a US PhD can vary depending on the specific program and university. In general, being an international student may make it more competitive, as there may be limited funding opportunities specifically designated for international students. However, domestic and international students are typically given access to the same funding opportunities, and it ultimately depends on the strength of your application and research proposal.

Applying to a private grad school may offer different funding opportunities, as they may have their own funding sources and criteria. It may be worth researching and reaching out to individual programs to inquire about their funding options for international students.

As for the best schools in California for HEP theory, aside from Berkeley and Stanford, some other top programs include Caltech, UCLA, and UC Santa Barbara. In New York, Columbia University and New York University have strong programs in this field, and the University of Florida is also highly ranked for HEP theory.

I wish you the best of luck in your PhD journey and encourage you to thoroughly research and reach out to potential programs to learn more about their specific funding and admissions processes.
