US News - Ranking of Graduate Programs

AI Thread Summary
The latest rankings from US News for graduate schools in physics and mathematics have been released, sparking discussions about their validity and methodology. While these rankings can serve as a guide for prospective students, the emphasis remains on individual research interests and experiences as key factors for success in graduate school. Concerns were raised about the transparency of the ranking methodology, particularly noting a broken link to the methodology section, which led to skepticism about the ranking process. Notably, Caltech has moved up in the rankings, tying with institutions like Princeton, Cornell, and Texas A&M, highlighting the competitive nature of these evaluations.

If you like rankings, here's the latest from "US News"
http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad

PHY: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad/phy/search
MAT: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/grad/mat/search

Of course, one should question how the rankings are determined and what the rankings might really mean. (see the first URL)
If you're applying to graduate school, these lists might be a useful guide...
but your success really depends on YOU, YOUR research interests, and YOUR experience at whatever grad school you choose.

Oh god it's that time again. Interestingly enough, the methodology section was a broken link when I clicked on it. I guess that means they pulled names out of a hat and just made sure the rankings "looked" right.

Looks like Caltech moved up a few spots.

i.e., lucky pull from the hat :P

Hooray, we made top 8. We tied princeton conrnell and TexasA&M. I can sleep at night once again -whew. Close one.

Hey, I am Andreas from Germany. I am currently 35 years old and I want to relearn math and physics. This is not one of these regular questions when it comes to this matter. So... I am very realistic about it. I know that there are severe contraints when it comes to selfstudy compared to a regular school and/or university (structure, peers, teachers, learning groups, tests, access to papers and so on) . I will never get a job in this field and I will never be taken serious by "real"...
Yesterday, 9/5/2025, when I was surfing, I found an article The Schwarzschild solution contains three problems, which can be easily solved - Journal of King Saud University - Science ABUNDANCE ESTIMATION IN AN ARID ENVIRONMENT https://jksus.org/the-schwarzschild-solution-contains-three-problems-which-can-be-easily-solved/ that has the derivation of a line element as a corrected version of the Schwarzschild solution to Einstein’s field equation.
