Valve that allows the flow of liquid but prevent air escaping

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the search for a valve that allows liquid to flow while preventing air from escaping from a sealed container. Participants explore the requirements and possible solutions for this scenario, including the use of one-way valves and active elements.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the existence of a valve that permits liquid flow but prevents air escape from a sealed container.
  • Another participant questions whether liquid and air would flow in the same direction and at the same pressure, suggesting the use of active elements.
  • A participant clarifies the context, stating that water flows from a tank through a pipe and emphasizes the need to prevent air from entering the tank while the pipe is open.
  • One suggestion is made that a one-way valve could fulfill the requirements, noting that such valves exist.
  • Another participant introduces the concept of active elements, describing a sensor that could detect water and control the valve's operation accordingly.
  • A further contribution mentions automatic drain valves that utilize a float and needle valve mechanism to vent water while maintaining air pressure.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on a specific solution, as multiple approaches and ideas are presented without agreement on the best option.

Contextual Notes

The discussion lacks detailed specifications regarding the pressure conditions and the exact requirements for the valve's operation, which may influence the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.

Hello,
I do not really know if this is the right place to post this message ... if it's not then I'm sorry
I am looking for a valve that allows the flow of liquid but prevent air escaping out form let's say a sealed container ...
Is there such a thing?

Liquid and air in the same direction, at the same pressure?
Can you use some active elements?

The water is in a tank and I want them to flow through a pipe at the bottom of the tank (by the force of gravity)
Now I do not want that air will enters the tank back form the pipe while the pipe is open (in the pipe can be pressurised air)
What do you mean by active elements ?

So you just need a 1-way valve? Those exist.

Active elements would be something like a sensor to detect water and open the valve based on that sensor.

Automatic drain valves are available that mount below a compressed air reservoir. They have a float supporting a needle valve.
When water builds up in the lower float chamber, the needle valve at the bottom lifts and the water is vented by air pressure.
