Physics What are the job prospects for Nuclear Physicists outside of academia?

AI Thread Summary
Nuclear physicists seeking research-oriented careers outside of academia can explore various industry opportunities, particularly in sectors like energy, healthcare, and technology. The discussion highlights that while academia often involves low pay and pressure to publish, industry roles may offer better compensation and less stringent publishing requirements. Fields such as superconductors, photonics, and biophotonics are noted for their potential job opportunities, although the availability of pure research positions may still be limited. The conversation emphasizes the importance of choosing a specialization that aligns with personal interests while considering the job market in the UK and Europe, where industry positions may be more favorable than in traditional physical sciences.

What jobs can a Nuclear Physicist get that involves actual research? I am interested in the field and wish to do a PhD in it however, I don't really want to stay in academia (low pay, publish or perish etc.). So are there any industry jobs a Nuclear Physicist could do? Other?

Also if possible could answers be relevant to the UK/Europe.

There is very little pure research in any field which is not academia or academia-like. Even in biotech companies where there is more research than in physical science-oriented companies there is higher pay but still the publish or perish pressure.

Though so. I think that settles it that I am going into either superconductors or photonics. Maybe biophotonics.

Is that because you think there are more industry positions available in those fields?

Not particularly. I am just narrowing down the fields that i would enjoy doing postgrad in There must be some good job opportunities in those fields though?

Hello, I graduated from undergrad a few years ago with a Major in Physics and minor in Electrical Engineering. I tried to get experience working on and testing circuits through my professor who studied Neutrinos, however covid caused the opportunity to go away and I graduated with no experience or internships. I have attempted to break into the engineering industry with no success. Right now I am considering going for a Masters in Electrical Engineering and I need advice on if this would be...
I don't know if anyone on here works for any of the well known defense companies of your country, whichever country you are from?? Also, if you choose to work in one, do you think the engineering education provide from your school would adequately prepare you for the job. What do I mean by that? Well if you work at say Lockheed Martin and you work in the latest iteration of a missile or if you work at Pratt & Whitney, they assign you to work in the team helping out with building the jet...
