What Happens to the Cart During and After Throwing a Ball from a Cart?

AI Thread Summary
When a ball is thrown to the left from a frictionless cart, the cart will move to the right due to the conservation of momentum. After the ball bounces off the wall, the cart continues to move right until the ball is caught. Upon catching the ball, the momentum transfer will cause the cart to move left again. The weight of the person and the ball does not affect the overall momentum change, as the system's momentum remains constant. Ultimately, after the ball is caught, the cart will come to a stop if no other forces act on it.

Homework Statement

You are standing on a frictionless cart which is at rest. At to you throw a ball to the left,
with momentum p, at a wall on the left that is attached to the cart. At t1 the ball bounces off the wall, with the same momentum.
a. What happens to the cart between to and t1?
b. At time t2 you catch the ball. What happens to the cart between t1 and t2?
c. What happens to the cart after time t2?

Homework Equations

p=mv

The Attempt at a Solution

When standing on the cart, and throwing a ball on a wall attached to the cart, I would think it depends on the weight of the person and the ball but we are not given that data. I think for part a, the cart would move to the left from the force of the ball.

For part b, I think the cart would move to the right due to momentum of the ball, since you would be acting like a second wall on the right receiving the ball.

For c the cart would stand still.

Thanks for your help.

In (a), the ball is thrown to the left. Which way will the cart tend to move?

if you stand on a skateboard( say totally frictionless) and push a wall with momentum p, which way will the board go?

You talk about the weight not being given, it is irrelevant as the same momentum of the ball is always the change that occurs, regardless of the initial mass... Try think of a cannon, which fires a cannonball, in which direction does the canon move when the ball is fired?

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
Thread 'A cylinder connected to a hanged mass'
Let's declare that for the cylinder, mass = M = 10 kg Radius = R = 4 m For the wall and the floor, Friction coeff = ##\mu## = 0.5 For the hanging mass, mass = m = 11 kg First, we divide the force according to their respective plane (x and y thing, correct me if I'm wrong) and according to which, cylinder or the hanging mass, they're working on. Force on the hanging mass $$mg - T = ma$$ Force(Cylinder) on y $$N_f + f_w - Mg = 0$$ Force(Cylinder) on x $$T + f_f - N_w = Ma$$ There's also...
