In summary, "s" is derived from the Latin word "scalus" and is used in science to represent length as it is the first letter of the word "scale." It is commonly used as a symbol for measurement or distance in equations and formulas. This convention has been established in the scientific community and there may be other symbols used such as "l," "d," or "r" depending on the specific equation or formula being used.

What is "s" for length derived from?

Hello.
I would like to ask what word is the letter "s" indicating length derived from? I can't seem to find it anywhere and I don't know if it is purely arbitrary label, or if it's from some actual word. Thank you very much.

It might be from German "Streche, Strechung" or something like that.

"Strecke"="distance" or "line segment".

The german Wikipedia indicates that the latin "spatium" (~"Path") might be the origin.

1. What is "s" for length derived from?

The letter "s" is often used to represent length in scientific equations and formulas. It is derived from the Latin word "scalus," which means "scale" or "ladder."

2. How is "s" related to length in science?

In science, "s" is typically used to represent length because it is the first letter of the word "scale." This letter is often used as a symbol for measurement or distance in equations and formulas.

3. Why is "s" used to represent length in scientific notation?

In scientific notation, "s" is used as the symbol for "seconds" when representing time, and it is also used as the symbol for "meters" when representing length. This helps to easily identify and distinguish between different units of measurement.

4. Is there a specific reason why "s" is chosen to represent length?

The use of "s" to represent length is simply a convention that has been established in the scientific community. It is a commonly used symbol that is easily recognizable and understood by scientists and researchers.

5. Are there any other symbols used to represent length in science?

While "s" is the most commonly used symbol for length in science, there are other symbols that may be used depending on the specific equation or formula being used. These can include "l" for length, "d" for distance, or "r" for radius.
