What is the smell from the new plastic storage box

In summary, the conversation discusses a tool storage box made of PP and possible reasons for the foul smell that emanates from it when the lid is opened. The smell is likely caused by small-molecule volatile organic compounds in the plastic material, such as plasticizers and mold-release compounds. This smell should dissipate in a well-ventilated area.

It's a tool storage box, probably made of PP (According to the label)
When its lid opened, quite an obvious (but not very strong) smell coming out
,what it could be? vaporized form of plastic?

A plastic can't evaporate because the polymer molecules are too large for that. However, a new plastic material can probably contain some traces of small-molecule volatile organic compounds it was synthesized from.

Plasticizer ? Mold-release compound ?

That would be my guess, phthalates are common plasticizers

Almost all plastics outgas VOCs--some more than others. PVC is notoriously known for its outgassing smell, especially new shower curtains.

I'd say 'mould release agent', too.
Foul smell should soon dissipate in a well-aired environment.

1. What causes the smell from a new plastic storage box?

The smell from a new plastic storage box is caused by the chemicals used in the manufacturing process. These chemicals, known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are released into the air and can create a strong odor.

2. Is the smell from a new plastic storage box harmful?

In most cases, the smell from a new plastic storage box is not harmful. However, some people may be more sensitive to the VOCs and may experience symptoms such as headaches or respiratory irritation. It is always a good idea to ventilate the area and avoid prolonged exposure to the smell.

3. How long will the smell from a new plastic storage box last?

The duration of the smell from a new plastic storage box can vary, but it typically dissipates within a few days to a few weeks. This depends on factors such as the type of plastic used, the ventilation in the area, and the sensitivity of individuals to the smell.

4. Can the smell from a new plastic storage box be removed?

Yes, the smell from a new plastic storage box can be removed. You can try airing out the storage box in a well-ventilated area, wiping it down with a mild detergent, or using odor-absorbing materials such as charcoal or baking soda. If the smell persists, you may need to replace the storage box.

5. Are there any ways to prevent the smell from a new plastic storage box?

To prevent the smell from a new plastic storage box, you can try purchasing storage boxes made from materials that have lower levels of VOCs. You can also choose to air out the storage box before using it or opt for storage boxes that are already pre-vented to reduce the smell.
