Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying specific machines used in metrology, particularly in quality control and measurement of production parts. Participants explore the functions and types of these machines, including their applications in monitoring tolerances and quality assurance.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that the machines are used for quality control to measure tolerances on finished products.
  • Another participant identifies the top machine as a coordinate measurement machine (CMM), noting its capability to measure production parts with high accuracy and mentioning its potential programming for automatic operation.
  • This same participant also describes the bottom machine as an optical comparator, used for measuring part features in a two-dimensional manner, and indicates that it is a manual model.
  • A later reply provides a link to a Wikipedia page about optical comparators, emphasizing their use for examining small parts through optical magnification.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the identification of the machines, with some differences in detail regarding their functions and applications. However, there is no consensus on all aspects of their use or features.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the machines' specific models and capabilities are not fully detailed, and there may be limitations in the descriptions provided by participants.

Quality control - for measuring tolerances on finished products I think

the top machine is a cmm,,coordinate measurement machine ..

measures production parts using touch trigger probe and may be programmed to do this automatically..appears to be Zeiss from Germany.. accuracy to .0002" volumetric
i have sold these since 1980
the bottom is an optical comparator used to measure part features in a 2 D manner
this is a manual model
these are gage lab instruments used to monitor the quality of production parts ..usually SPC package will alert management if parts are drifting out of tolerance

The bottom is an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_comparator" . It's used often times when examining very small parts, as you essentially use optics to "blow" it up.
