Solid State What would i need to begin in Solid State?

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on the physics requirements for studying solid-state physics and recommendations for introductory textbooks. Turton's book is suggested for its approachable content, though it has some inaccuracies noted in a linked blog. Ashcroft's text is also mentioned as a good option for beginners. There is a question regarding the necessity of statistical mechanics for understanding quantum mechanics in this context, indicating a need for clarity on foundational knowledge required for solid-state physics.

One could start with the book by Turton. It has a pleasant level. Unfortunately, it is not entirely accurate. I made a list:

I've started reading using Ashcroft, is a good text for begginers? In the case of QM i think i get what is necessary for this book, but is statistical mechanics necessary?

Hi, I have notice that Ashcroft, Mermin and Wei worked at a revised edition of the original solid state physics book (here). The book, however, seems to be never available. I have also read that the reason is related to some disputes related to copyright. Do you have any further information about it? Did you have the opportunity to get your hands on this revised edition? I am really curious about it, also considering that I am planning to buy the book in the near future... Thanks!
