For my first semester at the University of Arizona
---------------------------------
MATH223 - Vector Calculus
PHYS151 - Intro to Mechanics
ENGL101 - First Year Composition
TRAD104 - Science and Inquiry
---------------------------------
14 credits

I'm thinking about adding a German class onto that...

Also, my schedule is really weird... I have a lab 4:00-6:50 on Monday and the english class TR 5:00-6:15... Anyone have any experience with classes this late?

This is the Graph of my schedule

Do you live near campus? If so, I don't think that schedule is too bad. I've taken night classes, personally I don't like them, but I live far from campus so I either have to stay on campus for a long time, or waste time going back and forth from campus.

I'm taking (barring any unforeseen incidents):

-Topology (Munkres)
-Probability (Casella)
-Advanced Data Analysis (Using Minitab)
-Some core class (either Intro Microeconomics, Intro Sociology, or Psych Stats) depends on the professors and syllabus.

The best part of this schedule: all my classes are on Tuesday and Thursday!

Linear Algebra
Intro to Mathematical Biology
Second Semester Statistics
Organic Chemistry (with lab)
Other classes (Design Process and Directed Studies)

hopefully

linear algebra
intro to modern physics
some other math class
programming 1 or intro circuit analysis

-Vehicle Dynamics
-Flight Dynamics
-Aircraft Flight Testing
-Computer-Aided Design (8:00 am, DAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMIT)
-Integrated Product and Process Development (Senior Project course, one semester)

Then I am finally done with school, THANK GOD!

What the hell is CP?

EDIT: Are you talking about UMD? As much as I wanted to go there, it's just not worth spending 3 or 4 times the money on.

Yeah, its hella expensive out of state.

I would have chosen UMich over UMD anyway ... Same problem though. I would probably be willing to pay that much more for Cornell or MIT, but not those.

Thats the plan. I am just a regular ole ME. We have to take at least two courses outside our major, 7 electives total. So I am taking 3 aerospace courses since I am applying to Aerospace graduate school. (Id have to take those courses if I got accepted into Grad school anyways, so it kills two boeings with one bird strike).

  • #22
Did you take Aerodynamics yet Z-component?

  • #23
Not yet. I'm taking regular old Statics and Structures of Materials next semester (a 5 credit course--of course I have the option of splitting them up into two 3 credit courses). Aerodynamics for me comes 5th semester, and I'm going to my 3rd.

  • #24
When you take it, buy this book.

1c4d224128a055efb11fa010._AA240_.L.jpg

Its by A professor here at my school, and is almost a bible when it comes to Aerodynamics. Its the best book you will ever read. Anderson's book is amazing on the subjet. 10x better than my fluid mechanics book. I sent him an email because I want to ask him some questions on parts he wrote. Hopefully if he's back on campus I can meet up with him in his office. He works also at the Smithsonian and is semi-retired I think. Hes Professor Emeritus.

  • #27
A couple of weeks before school starts, I'm taking a geophysics field course

Then (might have to rearrange some stuff)

Fall term
Plate Tectonic Theory, Environments and Products (should have taken it 2 years ago)
Stratigraphy and Sedimentology
Physics of the Earth I
Film Studies (need an arts credit)
Planetary Sciences Research Project

Winter term
Film Studies continued
Planetary Sci. Research Project continued
Physics of the Earth II

Something to the effect of:

Physics Lab 1
Chemistry 1
Calculus 1
Fundamentals of Engineering

Those are the interesting ones, at least.

  • #29
My courses this Fall are:

Advanced Electricity and Magnetism
Quantum Physics 1
Mathematical Methods for Scientists (my only undergraduate course this Fall)
Research Seminar
Oral Communication Skills for Physics (basically a first year grad student's "how to speak in public" course)

And then there's the courses I'll have to teach as a TA. Not sure what I get, but I'm hoping it'll be calculus-based physics 1.

  • #30
I will be taking:
Quantum Mechanics A
Intermediate E&M
Advanced Physics Lab
Particle/Nuclear Physics
General Relativity
Optics or Religious Ethics(multicultural requirement) or Spanish 3

If I can manage 18 credits the next 2 semesters I can graduate!:-p

OUCH Cyrus! I had an AutoCAD lab at 8:00AM, so I feel for ya!

This fall for me looks like so:

MATH 344 Linear Algebra
PHYS 350 Mathematical Physics I
PHYS 474 E&M I
GERM 101 German
PSYC 220 Abnormal Psycology
T/RS 353 Religions of the World

E&M is probably going to take up a lot of my time, but otherwise I think things will be fine. I have a lot of GE's though. I guess that's the downside of going to a liberal arts university.

Calculus 'for scientists and engineers' (looks like a mish mash of some calc I and II)
Engineering mechanics I
Design and Communication I
Linear algebra 'for scientists and engineers'
Behaviour of Liquids, Gases and Solids

Are you at an American university? That lineup of classes just looks different from what I usually see at typical american universities. For instance, the 'behavior of lquids, gases and solids' class looks strange...plus 'behavior' is spelled differently than the American way. :-p

Could you provide a course description of the liquids, gases, and solids course?

  • #34
No, it is a Canadian university :)

Engineering 201 H(3-1.5T-3/2)
Behaviour of Liquids, Gases and Solids
An introduction to the behaviour of fluids and solids; phase transformations, the phase rule and phase diagrams. Ideal and real gases; equations of state and their engineering applications; simple kinetic theory; transport properties of fluids. Liquid state; vapor pressure; shear behaviour; flow of fluids in pipelines. Solids; crystalline and non-crystalline structure; non equilibrium solid phases; electrical and thermal conductivity; dislocations; stress and strain; creep; fracture.

Could you give me a sample American first year engineering curriculum?

Calculus III
Microcomputer Interface
Instrumentation and Data Acquisition
Instrumentation Lab
Software for Computer Control
Applied Analysis Lab
Engineering Ethics (not sure about this for Fall 07 as yet)

  • #36
Modern Physics II
Modern Physics Lab I (3 hour lab...yikes!)
Senior Seminar (only 1 credit, no homework)
Abstract Algebra
Analysis
Existentialism
First Year Arabic (Pass/Fail just for fun )

I can't believe this will be my last year already, but on the other hand, it's about time too!

well, what is your major? It looks like you are ME?

  • #38
No anyone who wants to be an engineer up here takes the courses I posted (plus 5 others : General Chem, multivariable calc, design n communication II, E&M, and a programming course) in the first year. Then after your first year you declare your major. I will prolly be going ME or EE, we'll see. :)

  • #39
I just added intro to engineering onto my schedule :)

  • #41
That schedule sucks. You want to be finished as early in the day as possible. 11:30-2:30 is going to be wasted time, because no one really studies between classes like that. It always gets wasted hanging out with friends between classes.

Its better to have one class after the other. Then you just get done with it and go home.

You have a LOT of wasted time between classes.

Watch, you lose this much time each day:

M: 3hr:30min
T: 30min
W: 3hr:30min
Th:30min
F: 1hr

Thats about 10 hours a week wasted between classes doing nothing.

I know. I didn't have many choices in regards to what time I have classes at. This is the only way to get my classes to fit together. I still check every so often to see if any classes opened up so that I would be able to switch a few things around. Unfortunately, moving one thing causes a conflict with another, and so forth.

Just spend that time talking to girls (not the ones in engineering though, ughhh).

  • #44
That reminds me... I recently had orientation and in that we had college specific meetings. The girls at the college of science and college of engineering meetings were mostly

  • #45
That is why you are required to take Psychology, English Lit, and other classes

Haha, well said, Lisa!

Honestly though, I couldn't tell you if that is the case since most of them usually have their nose buried in a book, so I can't tell:smile:
