Engineering Where to go with Aerospace Engineering?

AI Thread Summary
Aerospace Engineering PhD candidates should consider companies involved in space exploration and colonization when selecting universities. Key players in the industry include Lockheed-Martin, United Technologies, and Northrop-Grumman, with Boeing shifting focus away from commercial space to defense. California is noted as a hub for aerospace companies, but smaller firms also play a significant role, often contracting with NASA or the larger companies. Additionally, expertise in aerospace can translate well to careers in wind energy, providing alternative job opportunities if initial plans do not materialize.

I'm planning on getting a PhD in Aerospace Engineering and was wondering what kind of companies do research for space exploration/colonization. I need to know this so I know which university to go to so my career will be literally outside waiting for me.

I heard the location with the most aerospace companies is in California. I was planning on going to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne. I want to make a career out of researching new ways to go into space more efficiently and effectively.

The big 3 are Lockheed-Martin, United Technologies, and Northrop-Grumman. Boeing has stepped away from the large launch vehicles and commercial space to focus on Defense/Military systems.

There are numerous smaller companies, many of whom contract with NASA or subcontract to the Big 3 aerospace companies. Many aerospace companies have satellite offices located near several of the NASA centers.

If that career plan doesn't work out, you would be very valuable in any wind energy company.

Hello, I graduated from undergrad a few years ago with a Major in Physics and minor in Electrical Engineering. I tried to get experience working on and testing circuits through my professor who studied Neutrinos, however covid caused the opportunity to go away and I graduated with no experience or internships. I have attempted to break into the engineering industry with no success. Right now I am considering going for a Masters in Electrical Engineering and I need advice on if this would be...
