AI Thread Summary
The discussion critiques Yahoo Answers as a platform, highlighting its lack of quality control and the prevalence of incorrect answers being voted as "best." Users express frustration over the misleading nature of these answers, questioning the value of a "best wrong answer." While some acknowledge that Yahoo Answers can provide entertainment and a sense of superiority in knowledge, they also recognize that it often lacks serious, accurate contributions. Comparisons are made to other forums, particularly PF, which is praised for its higher quality of discourse and moderation. The conversation touches on the types of questions that dominate Yahoo Answers, with many being trivial or nonsensical, further emphasizing the platform's shortcomings in providing reliable information. Overall, the consensus leans towards viewing Yahoo Answers as a source of amusement rather than a credible information resource.

I choose the first one as best answer if I were you. He has Einstein as his avatar therefore everything he says must be true.

Those kind of sites will make you lose faith in humanity.

Yahoo answers is the biggest waste of space on the internet. Almost all answers are wrong, and yet they are voted best answer. What's the point of the best wrong answer?

Now, now, Yahoo answers has some use. Whenever I feel bad and dumb, then I just surf to yahoo answers and read what they write there. I immediately feel a lot smarter.
And whenever I feel smart and intelligent, I surf to PF, I immediately feel a lot dumber...

That's just one clear example of what happens when there's no quality control.

Yet, we have people whining about our policy on trying to get very high signal-to-noise ratio.

Zz.

I don't see how this picture proves PF is the best place to ask questions. If anything, it proves why Yahoo is not a good place for getting answers

Going one step further, it doesn't prove Yahoo is not a good place for getting answers either

To be fair, I would like to know the quality distribution of yahoo question/answers (they handle massive amount of questions each day). Likely, there are many good helpers on yahoo too.

Yes, and I've seen a correct answer and a wrong answer, and they select the wrong answer as the best answer!

That's bit of generalization.

Nonetheless, if that's true the likelihood of top contributors being crackpots/idiots should be very high. They have these top contributors ("Top Answerers in Science & Mathematics"):
http://answers.yahoo.com/dir/index;_ylt=AgO4uDGaer9djyVINmJE_TvW5nNG;_ylv=3?sid=396545122
Maybe sometime when I am free I will see how good are those top contributors.

Interesting sidenote:
US rankings:
http://answers.yahoo.com/rank_total;_ylt=An4K2eNGp1.gafoWX_gryG_EDH1G;_ylv=3
Global rankings:
http://answers.yahoo.com/rank_total;_ylt=Al5k4hYPn14sR08_743nGB8.zKIX;_ylv=3?f=a
From this it seems like health, relationships, and higher education are hot discussion topics on that site.

Before I discovered PF, I was quite active on the mathematics forums of yahoo. I stopped with yahoo because the user never put in an effort and expected us to do all the work. I don't like that attitude at all, that's why PF is in many ways superior to yahoo answers...

Also, there aren't many challenging math questions on yahoo answers.

The point was that Russia was in conflict with the country named Georgia while some people in the Georgia state of the USA thought Russia invaded their state because they've "herd" that in the news.

This site is more concentrated on those types of questions. It just increases your odds of getting a right answer.

We don't allow nonsense here. The forum is heavily moderated by staff and knowledgeable members, that's the difference.
