Automotive Wind tunnel to do smoke testing of my Formula Vee racing car

AI Thread Summary
The discussion focuses on designing a wind tunnel for smoke testing a Formula Vee racing car, specifically determining the size of the inlet cone for a test section measuring 2m x 2.5m x 5m. The user has prior experience building a smaller wind tunnel and aims to scale it up for personal use, not a school project. They plan to achieve wind velocities between 15 to 20 m/s and question the importance of the contraction cone for their smoke testing purposes. The conversation highlights the need for clarity on wind tunnel design principles and the specific requirements for effective smoke testing. Overall, the user seeks guidance on optimizing their wind tunnel setup for their racing car.

Welcome to the PF.

What is the context of your question? What is the wind tunnel for? What do you know so far about wind tunnel design? Is this for a school project?

I know a fair amount.I have built the wind tunnel found on Science Buddies Web site. Now I want to scale that up to do smoke testing of my Formula Vee racing car. From the test section size should be able to work out contraction cone size needed.

I am 56 yrs old so not for any school project for my personal use

What wind velocity do you want to support? Can you show us what work you've done so far?

I worked out 15 to 20 m/s.As said have test section area plotted out.How important is contraction cone for only smoke testing.Do not need cd factor and drag etc.

Here's a video by “driving 4 answers” who seems to me to be well versed on the details of Internal Combustion engines. The video does cover something that's a bit shrouded in 'conspiracy theory', and he touches on that, but of course for phys.org, I'm only interested in the actual science involved. He analyzes the claim of achieving 100 mpg with a 427 cubic inch V8 1970 Ford Galaxy in 1977. Only the fuel supply system was modified. I was surprised that he feels the claim could have been...
Thread 'Turbocharging carbureted petrol 2 stroke engines'
Hi everyone, online I ve seen some images about 2 stroke carbureted turbo (motorcycle derivation engine). Now.. In the past in this forum some members spoke about turbocharging 2 stroke but not in sufficient detail. The intake and the exhaust are open at the same time and there are no valves like a 4 stroke. But if you search online you can find carbureted 2stroke turbo sled or the Am6 turbo. The question is: Is really possible turbocharge a 2 stroke carburated(NOT EFI)petrol engine and...
