Or twelve blanks and three 'hits.' I was expecting this to go to 5 or even 6 when suddenly I saw a word that brings "Tom and Jerry" to my mind. That can't be right, I thought.

I know, but which one? according to anywhere on the Internet:
https://wordsrated.com/wordle-words/ said:
  • In total, there are 2,309 words that can be potential Wordle solutions.
  • However, originally the game was released with a dictionary of 2,315 words
  • After the game’s purchase by The New York Times, 6 words were removed due to being either offensive, out of date or using non-US spelling.
  • The full Wordle database contains 12,966 words, as players can also choose from a dictionary of 10,657 additional words that can be used to narrow down the answer.
From what I understand, people know this because the full list of words used to be downloaded with the game before NYT. It appears that NYT modified its list again but I doubt it is the full list.

I don't understand why the full 12,966 words are not used and why a word is not allowed to be repeated. It would make the game more fun and a computer program much simpler.

Good question. Once in a while a word not on the original canonical list of ~2300 words appears on the daily puzzle. The frequency of these appearances may or may not increase as the original list dwindles.
Is a human behind the choice or a bot? Don't forget that human or random choice are no longer the only possibilities. There is also AI-generated in-between possibility.

Probably because a word like ULYIE or WAKFS (the plural of a variant, no less) are on the acceptable extended list and I used them both for filters. However, people who rely on their memory and not on bookkeeping spreadsheets would stop playing if these appeared on the daily puzzle. So some entity, most likely a human or AI, had to pare down the ~13,000 words to a list that would be challenging, doable in 6 tries and not off-putting.

By off-putting I mean converting a 4-letter word to a 5-letter word merely by appending an "S" to make it plural. For example "TRAYS" is on the extended list but would be off-putting as a daily word because its provenance is a 4-letter word. Nevertheless, plurals are not strictly excluded. WOMAN and WOMEN appear on both lists as 5-letter words.

My guess is that few people write computer programs as an aid for playing the game.

This is actually a good question. Is Wordle solvable in the sense that you can make guesses to ensure that you never lose? In hard mode the answer is likely no as there are guesses that can make you end up in situations where you simply cannot get the answer with 100% certainty (although it may be possible to avoid such guesses I guess)

If you have a New York Times subscription, Wordlebot[WB] will tell you how many words are remaining after your first guess. Interpolating the number of words on the WB list to my list, it appears that there are now around 3100 ±260 solution words.

1207JOINTGLARE28437623993176
'remaining' includes past played solution words, as Wordlebot claims not to know which ones have been played.
...

Unfortunately, I've only collected about 90 of the extra words. Once in a while, after playing the game, WB's analysis of my game will say something like; "This was a great choice. ROTLS would've been one of my top picks. You've narrowed it down to only three remaining words: VILLA, QUALM or UVULA."

UVULA was not on my original list so I added it during game #1091. I've been doing this since game #728, when I added PARCH & LARCH.

The most I ever added in one game was 4, during game #1038: ASTER, ASKER, RESAW, and LASER.

This is something I’m noticing more and more. In many cases a significant number of possible solutions are ruled out simply on the grounds of being used already. In this case GRAIL, RIVAL, VIRAL. All used.
