if you ever deal with ions best is to look at redox reactions and understand their concept prior to attempting anything else. Second it would be good to brush up on thermodynamics that is relevant to general chemistry. The best source is "Basic Concepts of Chemistry" by Leo Malone, its published by Wiley. The best book I have found that explains fundamental laws of thermodynamics in nature is Microbiology by Prescott et al.
