What is Generator: Definition and 1000 Discussions

In electricity generation, a generator is a device that converts motive power (mechanical energy) into electrical power for use in an external circuit. Sources of mechanical energy include steam turbines, gas turbines, water turbines, internal combustion engines, wind turbines and even hand cranks. The first electromagnetic generator, the Faraday disk, was invented in 1831 by British scientist Michael Faraday. Generators provide nearly all of the power for electric power grids.
The reverse conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy is done by an electric motor, and motors and generators have many similarities. Many motors can be mechanically driven to generate electricity; frequently they make acceptable manual generators.

    Thoughts for a low-power 60Hz 120Vrms signal generator please

For a metrology (power metering) calibration test fixture at work, I'm looking for a low-cost way to generate an isolated 120Vrms (or 240Vrms) sine wave to feed into the high-impedance mesasurement circuitry. The first test fixture used a $40k AC Mains generator instrument driving a 1kW load...

Ok so here is something that made me scratch my head and I still can't come to a final conclusion. The basic idea is seemingly simple. Van der Graaf Generator: Charge, Potential and Redesign Questions

    1. i. I think that the potential on the surface will be the same as that of a point charge at the centre of the Van der Graaf sphere, which will be 30cm away (since this is the radius of the top sphere). Convert 30cm to m which is equal to 0.3 m. Therefore, to find the charge it can hold one can...
