Science (from the Latin word scientia, meaning "knowledge") is a systematic enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the universe. The earliest roots of science can be traced to Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia in around 3000 to 1200 BCE. Their contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and medicine entered and shaped Greek natural philosophy of classical antiquity, whereby formal attempts were made to provide explanations of events in the physical world based on natural causes. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, knowledge of Greek conceptions of the world deteriorated in Western Europe during the early centuries (400 to 1000 CE) of the Middle Ages, but was preserved in the Muslim world during the Islamic Golden Age. The recovery and assimilation of Greek works and Islamic inquiries into Western Europe from the 10th to 13th century revived "natural philosophy", which was later transformed by the Scientific Revolution that began in the 16th century as new ideas and discoveries departed from previous Greek conceptions and traditions. The scientific method soon played a greater role in knowledge creation and it was not until the 19th century that many of the institutional and professional features of science began to take shape; along with the changing of "natural philosophy" to "natural science."Modern science is typically divided into three major branches that consist of the natural sciences (e.g., biology, chemistry, and physics), which study nature in the broadest sense; the social sciences (e.g., economics, psychology, and sociology), which study individuals and societies; and the formal sciences (e.g., logic, mathematics, and theoretical computer science), which deal with symbols governed by rules. There is disagreement, however, on whether the formal sciences actually constitute a science as they do not rely on empirical evidence. Disciplines that use existing scientific knowledge for practical purposes, such as engineering and medicine, are described as applied sciences.New knowledge in science is advanced by research from scientists who are motivated by curiosity about the world and a desire to solve problems. Contemporary scientific research is highly collaborative and is usually done by teams in academic and research institutions, government agencies, and companies. The practical impact of their work has led to the emergence of science policies that seek to influence the scientific enterprise by prioritizing the development of commercial products, armaments, health care, public infrastructure, and environmental protection.
Hi,
I am a double major in Physics and Computer Science from an underdeveloped country. I would like to apply for a masters in computer science in Canada. What requirements do you think I should fulfill?
Currently, I have a CGPA of 4.0 (and I have only four additional semesters to go)...
I recently got heavier into cigar smoking and want to start storing cigars at home in a humidor. Like most things that become a sort of hobby of mine, I research the hell out of my new fascination.
So while learning about humidors, I discovered that the cigar community is split on whether or...
So I need a bit of outside input.
I am 20 years old, enrolled in my second year of community college (going for 3 years because I ended up starting late and going less than full time my first year). I did terribly in academics in high school, especially in math and science classes.
Well, long...
I have a sample exam in which the teacher provided the answers for, but I am not understanding these flowcharts. I understand actual parameters and formal parameters, but not how I would get the output. Can someone help explain this to me? I have uploaded one of the questions with the answers.

So, I want to write a paper for this year's science fair.
I wanted to ask, if anyone could give me a few suggestions on some cool topics?
It doesn't necessarily have to be Chemistry, it could be Physics, Mathematics, Bio, etc.
If anyone has some ideas about Food Chemistry, that'd be cool too...
Could I get hired with a B.S. in Computer Science degree that doesn't require any calculus based probability or statistics courses? It requires through Multivariable Calculus and Linear Algebra but no other mathematics courses besides Discrete Math. Here is the core of the program besides the...
Hi everybody,I am a math, physics, and English A-level and will be writing my final exams in October/November. My primary goal is to garner a BSc in math, physics, and computer science, before entering post-graduate study at a good research university in either math or physics, and hopefully in...
Hey guys,
Science I want to major in either applied mathematics or theoretical physics. I know it sounds cute to most real mathematicians but I love solving integrals (serious) and even in my free time I print out sheets at home and do numerous of weird integral calculus problems. However, I...
Hello Moderators,
Why there isn't any sub-section dedicated to "Computer Science & Engineering" in Engineering Section. It'll be very helpful for Computer Science students to share their doubts through that sub-section. We some group of CSE students had trouble clearing our doubts. So, we use to...

I've recently been looking at the friction caused by a computer mouse sliding on a mousepad.
I was wondering, if I increased the size (area) of the mousefeet (points of contact of the mouse with the mousepad) will I get an increase in static and/or dynamic friction?
Also, will increasing...
So I want to major in Computer Science but the school I will be attending only offers BA degrees(even in the sciences) since they are a small liberal arts school. Will it be a problem for me in the future when looking for jobs if I have a BA in Computer Science?
Also,
A lot of people tell...
I hope it's not too brazen to make my first post my first thread, as well.
I was tasked with developing a system of magic for a fantasy RPG I'm involved with. I wanted to step away from the traditional schools, and look at the magic in terms of what's happening. I won't elaborate, for sake of...
--squeeze into it.
Right, I've got all these shards of a shattered terrestrial planet that are encased in magic that allows them to hold atmosphere and have artificial gravity. The magic doesn't change it's gravity outside the limits of the spell, though, so the shards will interact with...
Does science answer "what is it" questions ? Answers that would be something other than the phenomenology associated with it . It being ...whatever...electric charge, time, space, consciousness, gravity etc . Or maybe is it physics that doesn't answer "what is it" kind of questions ?
Hi guys,
I started to write articles in science, especially high energy physics and LHC news, I made
