Beginning a Career, in or out of the field
Hello all, So I graduated last May with a bachelors degree in physics. Since then I've been looking like crazy for a job. Right now I'm in a situation where I would love to do something involving physics, but would also be completely fine with doing Data analysis, or any other field that...- Jake4

Quick question about Gibbs Free Energy
If this isn't the correct place to ask this, please point me to where I should. I feel there are quite a few guidelines to what can be posted and what cannot, so I hope I don't break any rules! I'm working on a problem, that deals with a superheated steam, that goes from an initial state to...- Jake4

Thermodynamics Question (entropy and heat capacities)
For the second problem, if I just go through the calculations I can integrate and find an expression for S, without even including V. Is that permissible even if in the problem it talks about going from V1 to V2 ?- Jake4

Thermodynamics Question (entropy and heat capacities)
Homework Statement Two somewhat related problems: 1. Using the expression for change in entropy of an ideal gas per mole: ΔS=CV+R ln(V) Calculate the change in entropy, change in Helmholtz Free Energy and change in Gibbs Free Energy when 1 mole of an ideal gas is compressed from 1 atm to 20...- Jake4

Simple Harmonic motion of buoyant force
i drew a fbd, and that got me F= F(buoyant)-mg thats as far as I can get... I've never felt so lost in a physics problem, i don't even know where to start...- Jake4

Simple Harmonic motion of buoyant force
Homework Statement a cylinder is in a deep pool of liquid. it has mass 2kg, diameter 10cm, height 15cm. the density of the liquid is 1.5g/cm^3. The cylinder is submerged up to 12cm, and let go. Show that the resulting motion is simple harmonic. Homework Equations x=Acos(wt)...- Jake4

Graduate What Is Beyond The Observable Universe?
Farther, yes, but more.. no... the universe is expanding at speeds much higher than the speed of light, thus it is physically impossible for us to see any more of it. That is what causes it to be 'unobservable' And I'll state again, that I do like thinking of different operators :)... -

Work and Ideal Gases: Calculate Initial Volume
It seems as if for the work equations, I would also need the Temperature. Is there a way around that? or possibly an equation that allows me to get it? Also, this is one of those things, that I just simply haven't done before... but how would I solve for a variable within the ln? you end...- Jake4

Work and Ideal Gases: Calculate Initial Volume
Homework Statement One mole of an ideal gas does 1975 J of work on the surroundings as it expands isothermally to a final pressure of 1.2 atm and a volume of 24 L. find the initial volume. The universal gas constant is 8.31451 J/K mol The Attempt at a Solution Something he...- Jake4

Graduate What Is Beyond The Observable Universe?
I like to think of the possiblity of different mathematical operators.. other than our standard +,-,÷,* .. in other universes :) -

Graduate What Is Beyond The Observable Universe?
I love the discussion as well :) I would say that it doesn't need to be one or the other. The universe could be expanding, without creating and without there being a void in which it is expanding. as Dave said above.. the current understanding doesn't claim the existence of a void... -

you're making some large assumptions.. who's to say 'space' exists beyond our universe. -
