AI Thread Summary
Coal tar is sought for various experiments, particularly for its applications in treating skin conditions like eczema. It can be procured from chemists or pharmacies, and online sources such as molecular compound sites or eBay may also offer it for sale. While some participants suggest attempting to extract coal tar from shampoos and soaps, it is generally recommended to obtain it directly due to its specific properties and uses. There is some confusion regarding terminology, as coal tar is sometimes referred to as naphtha, which is a distillation product derived from coal tar. Overall, acquiring coal tar from reliable sources is emphasized over searching for substitutes.

Coal Tar...wtf?

This experiment I am going to be working on calls for some coal tar. I have no clue where to get some besides trying to separate it out of shampoos and soaps. Any hints?

Or what i can use instead of Coal Tar.

I'm pretty sure it's used for skin problems, so go see a chemist (if you're not British see a pharmacist ;) ).

Bizarre. But if your claim that:

This experiment I am going to be working on calls for some coal tar

Then don't you think you should stick to procuring some coal tar instead of searching for a substitute? =P I'm sure you could find it online, molecular compound sites? Coal tar for sale? Ebay?
Just my two cents, perhaps a molecular scientist would like to contradict me =)

Isn't coal tar also called Naphtha? Look into that.

Naphtha is a distillation product from coal tar.

Coal tar is readily available from a Chemist, my sister used to cover herself in it. Good for eczema!

I want to test a humidity sensor with one or more saturated salt solutions. The table salt that I have on hand contains one of two anticaking agents, calcium silicate or sodium aluminosilicate. Will the presence of either of these additives (or iodine for that matter) significantly affect the equilibrium humidity? I searched and all the how-to-do-it guides did not address this question. One research paper I found reported that at 1.5% w/w calcium silicate increased the deliquescent point by...
I was introduced to the Octet Rule recently and make me wonder, why does 8 valence electrons or a full p orbital always make an element inert? What is so special with a full p orbital? Like take Calcium for an example, its outer orbital is filled but its only the s orbital thats filled so its still reactive not so much as the Alkaline metals but still pretty reactive. Can someone explain it to me? Thanks!!
I'm trying to find a cheap DIY method to etch holes of various shapes through 0.3mm Aluminium sheet using 5-10% Sodium Hydroxide. The idea is to apply a resist to the Aluminium then selectively ablate it off using a diode laser cutter and then dissolve away the Aluminium using Sodium Hydroxide. By cheap I mean resists costing say £20 in small quantities. The Internet has suggested various resists to try including... Enamel paint (only survived seconds in the NaOH!) Acrylic paint (only...
