Difference between insolation and solar radiation

AI Thread Summary
Insolation specifically refers to the amount of solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface, measured in watts per square meter, and varies based on time, season, and location. It is influenced by atmospheric conditions that can reflect, absorb, or scatter incoming solar energy. In contrast, solar radiation is a broader term that includes all electromagnetic energy emitted by the sun, encompassing visible light, infrared, and ultraviolet radiation. While both terms are related to solar energy, insolation focuses on what actually reaches the ground. Understanding this distinction is crucial for fields like meteorology and solar energy utilization.

At first I thought you had misspelled "insulation"!

I googled on "insolation" and got a website that defined "insolation" as the "intensity of solar radiation" perhaps that "intensity" is the difference you are looking for, perhaps there is no difference.

Insolation and solar radiation are both terms used to describe the amount of energy that reaches the Earth from the sun. However, there is a slight difference between the two.

Insolation refers specifically to the amount of solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface. It is measured in watts per square meter and can vary depending on factors such as time of day, season, and location. Insolation is affected by the Earth's atmosphere, which can reflect, absorb, or scatter some of the incoming solar radiation.

On the other hand, solar radiation is a broader term that refers to the entire spectrum of electromagnetic energy emitted by the sun. This includes not only the visible light that we can see, but also infrared and ultraviolet radiation. Solar radiation is measured in watts per square meter as well, but it refers to the total amount of energy that is radiated from the sun and does not necessarily take into account how much of that energy reaches the Earth's surface.

In summary, insolation is a more specific term that describes the amount of solar radiation that reaches the Earth's surface, while solar radiation is a broader term that encompasses all forms of energy emitted by the sun.

Kindly see the attached pdf. My attempt to solve it, is in it. I'm wondering if my solution is right. My idea is this: At any point of time, the ball may be assumed to be at an incline which is at an angle of θ(kindly see both the pics in the pdf file). The value of θ will continuously change and so will the value of friction. I'm not able to figure out, why my solution is wrong, if it is wrong .
TL;DR Summary: I came across this question from a Sri Lankan A-level textbook. Question - An ice cube with a length of 10 cm is immersed in water at 0 °C. An observer observes the ice cube from the water, and it seems to be 7.75 cm long. If the refractive index of water is 4/3, find the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. I could not understand how the apparent height of the ice cube in the water depends on the height of the ice cube immersed in the water. Does anyone have an...
