AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on converting acres to square meters, specifically addressing the discrepancy between a calculated value of 4286 m² from Wolfram Alpha and the book's solution of 4.05 x 10³ m². The user attempts to clarify the conversion process, noting that 1 acre equals 1/640 of a square mile and that 1 mile equals 1609 meters. The confusion arises from the calculation method used, as the user questions the accuracy of Wolfram Alpha's result. Ultimately, the correct conversion should yield approximately 4045.13 m², indicating a potential error in the online tool's calculation. The conversation highlights the importance of verifying conversion methods in mathematical problems.

Homework Statement

Problem 2.2 An acre is defined such that 640 acres = 1 mi2. How many square meters
are in 1 acre?

Homework Equations

Solution From Table 2.1,
1 mi = 1.609 km = 1609 m
1 acre = 1/640 mi ^2

The Attempt at a Solution

My solution comes from wolfram alpha
4286 m^2

BOOK SOLUTION: 4.05 X 10^3 m^2

my on a calculator: 4045.13

So, why did wolfram get it wrong?
(1/604)(1609 m)^2 --> wolfram

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
