Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the availability of advanced mathematics courses for individuals who are not enrolled in graduate programs, specifically focusing on options for self-directed learning in topics like Group Theory. Participants explore various institutions that may offer such courses.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • The original poster (OP) seeks legitimate sources for advanced math classes outside of graduate programs, expressing interest in courses like Group Theory.
  • One participant lists several universities that may offer relevant courses, including Univ of Indiana-East, U of Ottawa, and others.
  • Another participant shares their experience with an online mathematics bachelor's program at the University of Illinois Springfield, suggesting it aligns with the OP's interests.
  • A later reply points out that UIS may not allow non-enrolled individuals to take classes, which contradicts the OP's request for non-program enrollment options.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple options for advanced math courses, but there is disagreement regarding the accessibility of these courses for individuals not enrolled in a program, particularly concerning UIS.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the potential inaccessibility of courses at UIS for non-enrolled students, and the need for further clarification on the legitimacy and availability of courses at the listed institutions.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in pursuing advanced mathematics topics independently, particularly those who are not enrolled in formal graduate programs.

I'm finishing my undergrad work in Physics and was just curious if there were sources to take 'advanced' math classes besides enrolling in a grad program. If for instance I wanted to take a Group Theory course for my own entertainment or whatever. I'm looking for something legitimate e.g. not a youtube series.

Any suggestions would be great (if any exist).

Thanks.

I wrote a post with some options a few weeks ago but from my memory, try:

Univ of Indiana-East
U of Ottawa (KS)
U of Idaho (Eng Outreach)
Emporia State U
Nicholls State U
U of Central Florida
U of West Florida
Texas A& M U

I'm currently doing a mathematics bachelor's program at University of IL Springfield, purely online. I already have advanced degrees and whatnot, this is just for fun.

Check it out, sounds like it's close to what you're looking for: http://www.uis.edu/math/index.html

The OP mentioned that he/she did not want to enroll in a program, and UIS makes it prohibitive for anyone not enrolled in their program to take classes.
