AI Thread Summary
To determine the force exerted by the string to keep the 40 N rod horizontal when a 2 kg swallow lands on it, the torque created by the swallow must be balanced by the torque from the string. The swallow applies a downward force of 19.6 N at a distance of 0.3 m from the hinge, generating a counterclockwise torque. The string's force, acting at a distance of 1 m from the hinge, must counter this torque to maintain equilibrium. Proper visualization of the forces and their moments is crucial for solving the problem accurately. The correct setup will lead to the calculation of the string's force needed to keep the rod horizontal.

Homework Statement

James Gomer holding a uniform 40 N rod of length 1 m horizontally with a hinge on its left end and a vertical string on the right end. Now suppose a fully laden swallow with a mass of 2.00 kg lands and squawks loudly on the rod at a point 30.0 cm to the right of the hinge. Now what is the force exerted by the string to keep the rod horizontal?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I figured out that the string with no force exerted on the rod is 20N, so Far I have

Ʃfnet = 2kg*9.8*20(moment arm) - F*20

I don't think I have my setup correct though.. I'm just not visualizing this well

What point are you taking moments about? List the forces and their orthogonal distances from that point.

Thread 'Collision of a bullet on a rod-string system: query'
In this question, I have a question. I am NOT trying to solve it, but it is just a conceptual question. Consider the point on the rod, which connects the string and the rod. My question: just before and after the collision, is ANGULAR momentum CONSERVED about this point? Lets call the point which connects the string and rod as P. Why am I asking this? : it is clear from the scenario that the point of concern, which connects the string and the rod, moves in a circular path due to the string...
