Any database of results for the Michelson-Morley Experiment

In summary, Michel is looking for a collection of experimental data for the Michelson-Morley Experiment and is wondering if there is a compilation of data available. He has been directed to a sticky thread on the "FAQ: Experimental basis of Special Relativity" which provides a list of important experimental results and recommends starting with the papers mentioned in section 3 and paying attention to section 10.

Hello,
I would be interested in a collection of experimental data for the Michelson-Morley Experiment .
I would like to see if there would be many data available, and if a statistical analysis could be of some fun.

Would you know some compilation of data?

Thanks,

Michel

There is no single database. However, we have a sticky thread on "FAQ: Experimental basis of Special Relativity" that links to a list of some of the most important experimental results; start with the papers mentioned in section 3, and also look at any relevant papers they in turn reference. Pay attention to section 10 as well.

1. What is the Michelson-Morley Experiment?

The Michelson-Morley Experiment was a scientific experiment conducted in 1887 by Albert Michelson and Edward Morley to measure the speed of light in different directions and determine the existence of the luminiferous ether, a hypothetical medium thought to carry light waves.

2. What were the results of the Michelson-Morley Experiment?

The results of the Michelson-Morley Experiment showed that the speed of light was constant in all directions, contradicting the prevailing belief of the time that the speed of light was affected by the motion of the Earth through the luminiferous ether. This led to the development of Einstein's theory of special relativity.

3. Is there a database of results for the Michelson-Morley Experiment?

Yes, there are several databases that contain the results of the Michelson-Morley Experiment, including the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Physical Reference Data and the University of Dayton's Virtual Michelson-Morley Interferometer.

4. How do I access the database of results for the Michelson-Morley Experiment?

You can access the database of results for the Michelson-Morley Experiment through the websites of NIST or the University of Dayton. You can also find information and data on the experiment in various scientific journals and publications.

5. Why is the Michelson-Morley Experiment important?

The Michelson-Morley Experiment is considered one of the most important experiments in the history of physics because it provided evidence for the theory of special relativity, which revolutionized our understanding of space and time. The experiment also challenged the existing beliefs about the nature of light and paved the way for future scientific discoveries and advancements.
