AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers around experimenting with creative photography techniques, specifically focusing on capturing motion blur in images of trees influenced by wind and sunlight. The photographer utilized a tripod and a telephoto lens (70-300mm) with manual controls, maintaining a consistent exposure of 1/4 second while employing various methods to achieve blur, such as zooming in, allowing wind to create natural blurs, and making circular or random shakes. Participants express appreciation for the results, particularly noting the dynamic effect of the first image, which resembles a wormhole transporting viewers to an alien planet. The conversation invites others to share their own blur techniques and experiences.

So after posting the blur contest, I did some experimenting with trees in the wind and the sun.

Camera on tripod, telelens 70-300, all controls manual, exposure 1/4 sec while zooming in

Same exposure but letting the wind do the blurring work

Same exposure while making circles

While making random shakes into the sun

And same position but circling again

Any more blurs you like to share?

That is awesome. The top one is a wormhole transporting members to an alien planet as shown in pics below.

Yeah those are nice...and that first one, when I scroll up and down it looks like it's moving .

Similar to the 2024 thread, here I start the 2025 thread. As always it is getting increasingly difficult to predict, so I will make a list based on other article predictions. You can also leave your prediction here. Here are the predictions of 2024 that did not make it: Peter Shor, David Deutsch and all the rest of the quantum computing community (various sources) Pablo Jarrillo Herrero, Allan McDonald and Rafi Bistritzer for magic angle in twisted graphene (various sources) Christoph...
Thread 'My experience as a hostage'
I believe it was the summer of 2001 that I made a trip to Peru for my work. I was a private contractor doing automation engineering and programming for various companies, including Frito Lay. Frito had purchased a snack food plant near Lima, Peru, and sent me down to oversee the upgrades to the systems and the startup. Peru was still suffering the ills of a recent civil war and I knew it was dicey, but the money was too good to pass up. It was a long trip to Lima; about 14 hours of airtime...
