AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around solving the equation for T, where the user initially calculated T as 313 using the quadratic formula but expected it to be 323.2. They expressed frustration over their calculations and noted that using Maple yielded a result of 310.7. Upon correcting a potential typo from 05 to 0.5 in the equation, the user found T to be approximately 323.3. This correction significantly impacted the outcome, leading to a successful resolution of the problem. The importance of accurate input in calculations is emphasized in the discussion.

for the following question:
22.64*(T-273)+05*6.28*.001*[(T^2)-(273^2)]=22.64*(373-T)+.5*6.28*.001*[(373^2)-(T^2)]
T=?

my problem:
i used the x=[-b+(b^2-4ac)]/2 formula and got T=313
however, T should be 323.2!
agh... my calculation drives me nuts...

Oh my, that looks horrible.
Anyway, I've chugged it into Maple. It gave 310.7.
Then I changed the 05 in your expression to 0.5 since that was probably a typo and out popped 323.3

thanks! i'll try the calculations again...

I picked up this problem from the Schaum's series book titled "College Mathematics" by Ayres/Schmidt. It is a solved problem in the book. But what surprised me was that the solution to this problem was given in one line without any explanation. I could, therefore, not understand how the given one-line solution was reached. The one-line solution in the book says: The equation is ##x \cos{\omega} +y \sin{\omega} - 5 = 0##, ##\omega## being the parameter. From my side, the only thing I could...
