AI Thread Summary
A user is seeking a low-cost alarm device that activates when a specific voltage or amperage threshold is exceeded. They acknowledge the possibility of limiting current but emphasize the need for an alert system. The discussion invites clarification on the type of power source involved, such as AC mains or another source, to provide better recommendations. Additional context about the devices consuming power would help in identifying suitable options. The thread highlights the importance of understanding the application to find an effective solution.

Does anyone know of a low cost "alarm device" that is triggered by a preset power amount? In other words, I need an alarm that goes off when an amount of volts or amps are present. I realize that there there are many things that I could do to inhibit the amount of current, however I would like something that actually alerts me when a preset value is exceeded. I know very little about about electrical engineering and after searching the internet I figured I'd post here. Thanks ahead of time for any help anyone has to offer.

Welcome to the PF.

What kind of device is consuming the power? Is this AC Mains power from the wall, or power from some other source?

If you can provide more context, we can help you understand your options better.

Very basic question. Consider a 3-terminal device with terminals say A,B,C. Kirchhoff Current Law (KCL) and Kirchhoff Voltage Law (KVL) establish two relationships between the 3 currents entering the terminals and the 3 terminal's voltage pairs respectively. So we have 2 equations in 6 unknowns. To proceed further we need two more (independent) equations in order to solve the circuit the 3-terminal device is connected to (basically one treats such a device as an unbalanced two-port...
Thread 'Weird near-field phenomenon I get in my EM simulation'
I recently made a basic simulation of wire antennas and I am not sure if the near field in my simulation is modeled correctly. One of the things that worry me is the fact that sometimes I see in my simulation "movements" in the near field that seems to be faster than the speed of wave propagation I defined (the speed of light in the simulation). Specifically I see "nodes" of low amplitude in the E field that are quickly "emitted" from the antenna and then slow down as they approach the far...
