Does your school have a football team?

Are they any good?

After beating the Buckeyes, my team sits atop the Big 10!

You dirty, rotten Nittany scum ! You just got lucky...all thanks to that lousy interception. Bah !

PS : By the way, Young and Skynyrd made up and even did a few gigs together, as a goodwill kind of thing. But yeah, Young was spot on !

I don't know how to feel. The football team at the university I've just started working at this fall (WVU) just beat my alma mater's team (RU). :frown: It's tough having split loyalties like that. (Then again, my alma mater's team sucks, so this is no surprise that everyone beats them). I guess I better be careful what sweatshirt I wear outside on game days, though. :bugeye:

Thanks for keeping that top-10 spot warm for us!

Yeah, the sack/fumble recovery, fourth-down conversion, and OSU's scoreless second half were pretty lucky too.

Remind me what your school is ranked in football?

Don't confuse the poor girl. Gale, a "ranking" refers to the team's standing relative to other teams in the country. It's that number you'll often see in front of other teams' names when you're reading the box scores.

My school's football team sucks, although we have sent players like Brian westbrook, Brian finneran, and Howie Long to the pros. In 1 month though College BBall starts and my school is supposed to be ranked in the top 5 in the nation.

My school doesn't have a football program, so I root for the same team I've been rooting for since I was a kid - the hometown Trojans. They've been doing pretty well the last couple of years.

Pa has to win a few every now and then, right ? I mean...the odds catch up, don't they ? Is it a decade yet, since the Rose Bowl ?

You totally have to give it up for Nebraska 4-1 after last season. We almost beat Texas Tech but isntead we intercepted and fumbled on the same play with just over 1 minute left when we could have easily just took a knee and run the time out. Instead TT took it down to the red zone for a double hurried pass to a double covered reciever for the LUCKY win. Nebraska came back from 21-0 to almost win against 15th ranked TT what a game to watch but what a tragic ending. Anyways it is good to have the same fire back in Nebraska after 3 years of it being gone.

Does Nebraska still have the Raiders' coach...watsisname ? Callahan ?

  • #22
The Big 12 is a joke right now. I'm glad Callahan seems to be turning his program around, but there is no excuse right now not to win at least nine games in that conference. It's sad, too. Texas is probably going to steamroll through every team it faces this year (except Ohio State) in the regular season and end up in the Rose Bowl, only to be sacrificed to a much better USC team. I'd much rather watch a more deserving ACC or SEC champ. If Virginia Tech, Florida State, Georgia, or Alabama (heck, even Penn State) manages to run the table and gets passed over by Texas, another crime has been committed like Oklahoma getting in over Auburn last year and getting in over USC the year before, only to be thoroughly dismantled both years. They should bar all Big 12 and Big East schools from the championship game until those conferences can get their acts together.

Back to Nebraska, though. I like Callahan, and I hope he gets you guys a bowl win this year. In fact, I actually like Texas and I hope they win their bowl game, too. I just hope it isn't the Rose Bowl, because I'm pretty certain that USC would stomp all over them, as would Va Tech and possibly a few other schools.

If you guys missed the USC/Notre Dame game, you might have missed one of the all-time classic finishes in college football. This one is up there with the Doug Flutey hail mary and the Stanford band play. To pull out a win after the Notre Dame fans rush the field thinking they've pulled out a win . . . wow.

I missed that one, but the Michigan - Penn State game would've come a close second.

Michigan up by 3 with 2 minutes left. Penn State drives the length of the field and scores (after a pass interception on 4th and 7 gets them to the 10 yd line) going up by 4 ... 53 seconds on the clock. A field-goal will not do it for the Wolverines.

Michigan (Breaston, I believe) returns the kickoff to midfield ! A couple of botched plays later, Carr calls time-out. After arguing with refs for responding late (or who knows what), he gets 2 seconds put back on the clock. 28, no 30 seconds to go...Michigan near midfield. 4 plays later, there's 6 seconds on the clock, Michigan at about the PSU 20-something yd line. Spread offense - all receivers run deep and are covered by the secondary...Henne hits a tight-end at the sideline for a gain of about 10 with ... 1 second on the clock. The Big House is in prayer.

Last play of the game; Henne throws a dart to freshman reciever Manningham in the end-zone for the score and the win !

Darn! I always cheer for whoever is playing against Michigan, even if it's Penn State.

It was a madhouse here. It was the homecoming game, and I needed to get into the lab to work. Well, if you're not going to the game, you might as well work, because everything else in town was closed for the game! Darn small college towns. But the traffic was horrid...even worse was trying to get back off campus once I was on it...all the ways I know to go were barricaded off for game parking.

You're crazy for not watching the game (WVU vs Louisville) - it was fantastic. The game went into overtime, and a second, and a third - with TDs in all three OTs. In the third OT, UL couldn't complete the mandatory 2-pt conversion, which WVU did !

Of course...I've been studying all day !

A lot of good finishes today. The Minnesota/Wisconsin game was an absolute heartbreaker. All the Gophers have to do is get the punt off and the game is probably over. Something like this happens every year to that poor team. I'd hate to be a Minnesota fan.

I can feel a good finish coming on in the UCLA/WSU game as well. Another Pac-10 shootout.

Edit: The Penn State/Michigan game wasn't carried here, but I was following it on yahoo! while watching the USC game.

Bleh. I could do without the games. I wouldn't mind doing the tailgate parties, but people here seem to take the games too seriously and I'm just starting to get irritated that I can't just get into the lab and get my work done without having to navigate around all the football traffic (on the up-side, the parking lot I'm usually assigned to park in is used for football parking, so I get a special permit for game days to park right up next to the building I work in...the door closest to my lab even :approve:). It's the only day I don't have to hike up a mountain from the parking lot to my lab.

I don't even know how to get tickets here yet (I didn't look into it because I thought it would be cold by now and I'm not into the sitting in bleachers freezing thing so only usually go to the first few games of the season if I go to any). I just got information on basketball tickets yesterday, so I probably started too late to get information on football tickets.

I visited a friend (post-doc in our lab) downtown after work (tried to suggest I should fix her up with you  but she found some MD in Syracuse this week...sorry Gokul, I tried. :frown: I thought you'd be her type, and Columbus is closer than Syracuse.)

As far as I'm concerned, Saturdays during college football season are Sabbaths. If I was God, you'd be going to hell for working. Can't you take a day off?

By the way, your Alma Mater beat the crap out of Syracuse.

It was the only day that the equipment I needed to use wasn't booked solid (gee, I wonder why ). I'd have preferred taking the day off just to avoid the traffic, but the work needed to get done.

Really? Is Syracuse that bad this year? Maybe that's why I'm so unenthusiastic about college football. How could you get excited about it if your team lost every game you ever attended? WVU beat them last week, so I was a little happy to finally be on the winning side, though I had mixed feelings about who I wanted to win.

I don't usually watch college football, but I saw the second half of USC - Notre Dame. It was pretty good (okay, I was screaming at the TV, whatever). I might start watching more if the games are like that. What are some good teams to watch?

I have to thank you guys for this thread. It filled me in with just enough information about yesterday's games to "fake it" with the guys I was hanging out with last night. One of my friends called and invited me to join her...she is friends with a bunch of engineering grad students...so I got to meet a bunch of new people last night, but they were all talking about football when I first got there, so I was able to throw in a few comments like, "yep, it seemed there were a lot of good games today."

No you can't do without the games! Yesterday's game was AWESOME! Everyone was leaving thinking the game was over when it was 7-24 and then when we had 8 mins left everyone was running back to see WVU's huge comeback. We had a min left when we got the score up to 24 to tie Louisville and then went in three OT's. No one believed what was going on and everyone was cheering like crazy. You've GOT to go to the next two games. BTW, www.wvugame.com to get tickets.

Next two games? One is a Wednesday! I have experiments to do and can't just pick up and leave in the middle of them (Why oh why did they pick a weekday?! Geez, how are employees supposed to get work done?). The other one is Thanksgiving. Shouldn't people be home with their families, not hanging around for football? I never understood why there are games on a holiday that is supposed to be celebrated with family...the players should be allowed to go home and eat turkey like everyone else.

We never turned on football on Thanksgiving in my family. It was considered rude to watch TV and ignore the guests (or to be a guest and help yourself to watching the host(ess)' TV).

Yep, every year. It didn't matter, even if we went to one of the other relative's houses, it was the same. I only have one cousin who is really into football, but even he understands that family gatherings are for family, not watching TV. They should play the games the Friday after Thanksgiving when everyone is sitting around overstuffed on leftover turkey from the day before with nothing better to do (I might even watch football that day...it's better than the other national past-time of going to overcrowded malls on that day. :-p)

That's more reasonable. Let them go be with their families then come back on the weekend for a game.

Shouldn't have to be college sports...let the kids go home for the holiday. They should leave that for the pro teams...for what they get paid, one should expect to have to work holidays.

No one tells Moonbie about the college bowl games, where most of the BIG ones occur over the X-mas/New Year holidays!

Moonbear, your alma mater is bowl eligible for the first time since 1978! Go Scarlet Knights! Greg Schiano is turning things around in America's worst conference outside of the Big-12 North.

So how about those Bruins? Four consecutive 4th quarter comebacks; it's almost not even suspenseful anymore. The annual end of the year showdown with USC is shaping up to be huge, in what could be a meeting between two undefeated teams.

In other news, D.J. Shockley goes down and the Georgia Bulldogs follow suit. Alabama, USC, Texas, Virginia Tech, and UCLA stand alone as the only unbeatens now. Texas and UCLA both survived scares this week. Looking ahead, there aren't too many big matchups next week. Tennessee heads to Notre Dame, looking to avenge last year's home loss to the Irish. Given the way the Vols looked against South Carolina tonight in Knoxville, chances are they get destroyed in South Bend. The Cal-Berkeley Golden Bears head up to Eugene to face the Oregon Ducks. Oregon looked to be on schedule for a 10-1 year before the loss of Kellen Clemens. Can they pull it together and get a win against the only ranked opponent left on their schedule?
Two games, however, stand above the rest. Penn State hosts the Wisconsin Badgers with first place in the Big-10 on the line. If the Nittany Lions win, the conference title and a BSC berth are within sight, with nothing left but a road game against the Michigan State Spartans. Wisconsin, on the other hand, would still have to face a tough Iowa team that has a penchant for finishing strong.

The game of the week, however, takes place in the ACC. The Miami Hurricanes head up to Blacksburg to face the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Hurricanes stand as the best remaining threat to the Hokies short of whoever they may face in their bowl game this year. A resounding win might move them into 2nd place, ahead of a Texas team that stands to take some serious hits in the computer rankings over the next month, with nothing but cream puffs left on their schedule. Whoever wins this game also controls their own destiny in the ACC Coastal division.

My picks:

California 28
Oregon 21

I like the Ducks. They've played tough in every game this year, and I'd love to see them get a BSC at-large bid, but it's hard to see them winning without Clemens against a tough Bears team.

Notre Dame 27
Tennessee 13

The Vols still have a very tough defense, but they have yet to face an opponent with the kind of complete offense that the Irish boast. On the other side of the ball, it's hard to see how they're going to move it. Notre Dame is vulnerable in the secondary, but the Vols have no passing game whatsoever.

Penn State 41
Wisconsin 28

The Badgers will get a wake-up call next week. They haven't been able to stop people all year, and Penn State's superior speed and playmaking ability is going to show. Brian Calhoun will suffer the fate of Lawrence Maroney against the Nittany Lions if Wisconsin can't muster something out of John Stocco.

Virginia Tech 21
Miami 6

This game will be hard fought, but the Hokies defense will stifle a Miami team that is still finding itself offensively. I look for the Hurricanes to largely hold Tech in check as well, but at least one defensive/special teams touchdown will enlarge the margin of victory. This could be the week that Virginia Tech passes Texas in the standings, with a solid win over a top ten opponent (a legit top ten opponent, not Texas Tech). These guys gave USC a run for the their money in last year's season opener and I think they'd be the best matchup. Texas might have to settle for either Alabama or LSU, depending on who makes it out of the SEC.

My early BSC predictions:

USC v. Virginia Tech in the Rose Bowl
Texas v. LSU in the Sugar Bowl
Penn State v. Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl
West Virginia v. Alabama in the Orange Bowl

Other Big Bowls:

Ohio State v. Florida in the Capitol One Bowl
Iowa v. Georgia in the Outback Bowl
Colorado v. Auburn in the Cotton Bowl
Louisville v. Florida State in the Gator Bowl
UCLA v. Texas Tech in the Holiday Bowl
California v. Michigan in the Sun Bowl
Wisconsin v. Oklahoma in the Alamo Bowl
