    12v Bicycle Motor
AI Thread Summary
When creating a DIY 12v electric bicycle, using a starter motor is not advisable due to its design for short bursts of use, which leads to rapid battery drain and limited lifespan. For experimentation on a budget, alternatives like used automotive motors, such as windscreen wiper motors, may be viable. It's essential to consider the type of motor for speed control, as this will impact the robustness of the required controller. Engaging with YouTube contributors who have experience with similar projects can provide valuable insights and solutions. Overall, while experimenting is possible, a reliable long-term solution will likely require investment in a proper motor and controller.

I am making my own 12v electric bicycle but have read that a starter motor is not acceptable because it is not designed for extended use. What motor could I use?

What are your objectives? If you just want to experiment I'd try a used starter motor. If you want a reliable long term solution for commuting to school/work I would seek out others that have already done a few or buy a conversion kit.

Hi Cwatters,
Just experimenting at the moment and at the least possible cost. I realize that there are kits out there but budget is the key word! I don't mind paying for a new motor but I have seen bikes on you tube running with starter motors but how long would they last?

No idea but I can see a problem with any permanant magnet or shunt wound motor.. the motor is effectively stalled until the bike is moving. It might be that a series wound motor is better but no idea where to get one cheap.

You also need to think about speed control and that will depend on the type of motor. In this application I expect the speed controller might also need to take a lot of abuse.

A starter motor would not be very suitable. If you have one then give it a go but it is not designed to run for more than a couple of hours in all its lifetime - it has COPPER brushes, for a start. It will take a lot of current, too, and drain your battery v. quickly. There are other automotive motors that would do the job - a windscreen wiper motor, for instance. But, as stated earlier, there will be a problem with any cheap motor and you would need to look into a suitable controller, which is possible to make but would need to be robust and sophisticated, I think.

Why not contact the you tube contributors for ideas? They have 'been there' before and solved some of the problems..

Hi there, im studying nanoscience at the university in Basel. Today I looked at the topic of intertial and non-inertial reference frames and the existence of fictitious forces. I understand that you call forces real in physics if they appear in interplay. Meaning that a force is real when there is the "actio" partner to the "reactio" partner. If this condition is not satisfied the force is not real. I also understand that if you specifically look at non-inertial reference frames you can...
I have recently been really interested in the derivation of Hamiltons Principle. On my research I found that with the term ##m \cdot \frac{d}{dt} (\frac{dr}{dt} \cdot \delta r) = 0## (1) one may derivate ##\delta \int (T - V) dt = 0## (2). The derivation itself I understood quiet good, but what I don't understand is where the equation (1) came from, because in my research it was just given and not derived from anywhere. Does anybody know where (1) comes from or why from it the...
