Designing a Space Rover for Mars: A Rookie's Challenge

AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on the challenges faced in designing a Mars rover using SketchUp, particularly the difficulty in creating basic components like wheels and angled objects. The user expresses frustration with their lack of 3D design experience and seeks recommendations for more user-friendly software that could enhance the professionalism of their project. There is a suggestion to share current design efforts for constructive feedback. The user has a deadline of December 20th and is feeling overwhelmed by the task. Overall, the conversation highlights the need for accessible tools and support for beginners in 3D modeling.

I have to design a space rover for Mars that has to have quite a few operating gadgets on it.
Without giving a lot of details I am using sketch up and needless to say it sucks. I can't even figure out how to make a wheel. and I can't make objects at angles, like shafts or motors or anything. The vehicle has to have a robotic arm that operates. I would just like to know if anyone has a recommendation for a program I can download to make my rover look a little more professional than it does now. I would post a pic of it but its so terrible I would be embarrassed.
By the way I have absolutely no 3d design experience and that is probably half of my problem. I have till December 20th and I started on it last night.

thanks,
Lonnie

What student versions of 3D CAD software do you have available? You should post your efforts so far so that we can offer some suggestions

Here goes

I know this is horrible, but I don't know what to do about it. My lack of design experience really shows when it comes to computer 3d models. I am using sketch up 3d

Thread 'Have I solved this structural engineering equation correctly?'
Hi all, I have a structural engineering book from 1979. I am trying to follow it as best as I can. I have come to a formula that calculates the rotations in radians at the rigid joint that requires an iterative procedure. This equation comes in the form of: $$ x_i = \frac {Q_ih_i + Q_{i+1}h_{i+1}}{4K} + \frac {C}{K}x_{i-1} + \frac {C}{K}x_{i+1} $$ Where: ## Q ## is the horizontal storey shear ## h ## is the storey height ## K = (6G_i + C_i + C_{i+1}) ## ## G = \frac {I_g}{h} ## ## C...
