AI Thread Summary
A Greek student from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Patras University is seeking advice on choosing between two courses: Adaptive Control and Nonlinear Control. The discussion highlights that both courses are valuable, with adaptive control often applied to address nonlinear control issues. It is suggested that adaptive control may be more application-oriented, while nonlinear control leans towards theoretical concepts. The recommendation is to choose based on personal preference for practical versus theoretical learning.

Hello everyone! This is my first post. I am a Greek student at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Patras University.
I have a very hard time deciding which course I should choose to attend between the two:

1. Adaptive Control or
2. Nonlinear Control

I would like to hear your opinion. Thank you for your time!

Both could be very good classes. Often adaptive controllers are a solution used to handle non-linear control problems. I don't think you could go wrong with either. In general I might say adaptive controllers would be a more application oriented class and the non-linear control class is probably more theoretical. If you prefer one of those over the other then pick that...

I’ve been looking through the curricula of several European theoretical/mathematical physics MSc programs (ETH, Oxford, Cambridge, LMU, ENS Paris, etc), and I’m struck by how little emphasis they place on advanced fundamental courses. Nearly everything seems to be research-adjacent: string theory, quantum field theory, quantum optics, cosmology, soft matter physics, black hole radiation, etc. What I don’t see are the kinds of “second-pass fundamentals” I was hoping for, things like...
TL;DR Summary: I want to do a PhD in applied math but I hate group theory, is this a big problem? Hello, I am a second-year math and physics double major with a minor in data science. I just finished group theory (today actually), and it was my least favorite class in all of university so far. It doesn't interest me, and I am also very bad at it compared to other math courses I have done. The other courses I have done are calculus I-III, ODEs, Linear Algebra, and Prob/Stats. Is it a...
