Finding sequences on the TI-89 Titanium Calculator?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around using the TI-89 Titanium calculator to derive formulas from given sequences of numbers. Participants explore the feasibility and methods for inputting sequences and obtaining corresponding mathematical formulas, focusing on the direction of deriving formulas from sequences rather than generating sequences from formulas.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant seeks guidance on inputting a sequence into the TI-89 Titanium calculator to obtain a formula, emphasizing the need for the process to work in that direction.
  • Another participant suggests that there may be limitations, noting that there could be infinite possibilities for predicting the next term in a sequence, using the example of the sequence 1, 2, 4, 8, 16.
  • A different participant provides a specific example of a sequence (1, -1/3, 1/9, -1/27, 1/81,...) and expresses a desire for the calculator to return a formula like (-1/3)^(n-1).
  • One participant questions the idea of finding a "simplest" formula and suggests looking for common ratios or differences as a potential method, though they express uncertainty about the ease of this process.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the methods or limitations of deriving formulas from sequences, indicating that multiple views and uncertainties remain in the discussion.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations regarding the assumptions about the nature of sequences and the definitions of "simplest" formulas, as well as unresolved questions about the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Can someone guide me toward using my TI-89 Titanium calculator for sequences?

I would like to be able to PUT IN a sequence of numbers and have it GIVE ME the formula. Not vice versa please. Thanks.

I would suggest there must be some limit to this - there are probably infinite answers to "guess the next term".

For instance, what do you think is the next term for 1, 2, 4, 8, 16?

What I mean is that I'd like to put in a sequence of numbers such as (1, -1/3, 1/9, -1/27, 1/81,...) and have it give me a formula like (-1/3)^n-1

So you want a simplest formula, for some values of simplest? I am not sure of an easy way to do this, except perhaps look for things like common ratios / differences, perhaps taken over several steps?
