Fringe pattern of a vapour lamp

In summary, a fringe pattern of a vapour lamp is a pattern of dark and light bands that are observed when light from the lamp is passed through a narrow slit or diffraction grating. This pattern is created by the diffraction of light and is affected by factors such as wavelength, distance, and grating spacing. The fringe pattern is significant in understanding properties of light and has practical applications in fields such as spectroscopy. It can also be used to determine the properties of the lamp and improve its performance.

Homework Statement

Hi
Please, what fringe pattern would be obtained with a sodium vapour lamp?

Homework Equations

The Attempt at a Solution

I am guessing that a dominant yellow colour would be obtained. The sodium is almost acting like a monochromatic light and therefore has a particular wavelength. But I am not sure how correct my answer is. Also, what will the sketch look like? Please comment

What is the setup?
You don't have fringes from just a lamp on it's own

1. What is a fringe pattern of a vapour lamp?

A fringe pattern of a vapour lamp is a pattern of dark and light bands that are observed when light from a vapour lamp is passed through a narrow slit or diffraction grating.

2. How is a fringe pattern of a vapour lamp created?

A fringe pattern of a vapour lamp is created when light from the lamp passes through a diffraction grating, which causes the light to diffract and form interference patterns.

3. What factors affect the fringe pattern of a vapour lamp?

The factors that affect the fringe pattern of a vapour lamp include the wavelength of the light, the distance between the source and the diffraction grating, and the spacing of the grating itself.

4. What is the significance of the fringe pattern of a vapour lamp?

The fringe pattern of a vapour lamp is significant in understanding the properties of light, such as diffraction and interference. It is also used in various scientific applications, such as spectroscopy and determining the wavelength of light.

5. Can the fringe pattern of a vapour lamp be used to determine the properties of the lamp?

Yes, the fringe pattern of a vapour lamp can be analyzed to determine the properties of the lamp, such as the wavelength of light it emits and the spacing of the grating. This information can be used to calibrate the lamp and improve its performance.
