SUMMARY

The discussion centers on calculating the final temperature of a mixture of two water samples in an insulated thermos, indicating an adiabatic process. The specific masses and temperatures provided are m1 = 2.73 kg at t1 = 42.32°C and m2 = 1.88 kg at t2 = 21.34°C. The formula used for this calculation is Tf = [(m1*T1) + (m2*T2)] / (m1+m2), which accurately determines the final temperature of the combined water masses without heat loss to the environment.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of adiabatic processes in thermodynamics
  • Basic knowledge of heat transfer principles
  • Familiarity with the concept of specific heat capacity
  • Ability to manipulate algebraic equations
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the principles of thermodynamics, focusing on adiabatic processes
  • Learn about specific heat capacity and its role in heat transfer
  • Explore examples of heat exchange in insulated systems
  • Practice solving problems involving mixtures of substances at different temperatures
USEFUL FOR

Students in physics or engineering, educators teaching thermodynamics, and anyone interested in understanding heat transfer and adiabatic processes.

You have two cups, one with m1 = 2.73 kg of water at t1 = 42.32oC and the other with m2 = 1.88 kg at t2 = 21.34oC. You mix the two in an insulated thermos. What is the final temperature of the water?

I'm pretty sure that this is supposed to be an adiabatic process, because you are trying to keep all of the temperature from going into the outside environment. However, i have absolutely no idea as to how to go about doing this problem.

Is there a certain equation that I am supposed to use?

Tf = [(m1*T1) + (m2*T2)] / (m1+m2)

Hope this helps! :)
